AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike racer Cameron Beaubier had surgery Wednesday, March 28 to repair a badly broken right knee cap, according to reliable sources. The surgery was performed at the National Surgery Center in Los Gatos, California, the same facility where Beaubier had surgery December 28, 2011, to repair a broken left tibia he suffered while training on his dirt bike. Beaubier, who finished third on his Y.E.S. Graves Yamaha YZF-R6 in the Daytona 200 March 17 at Daytona International Speedway, was sleeping when Roadracingworld.com attempted to contact him Thursday morning and did not respond to calls or text messages sent to his cell phone. Beaubier’s father Jeff and Yamaha’s Tom Halverson both declined to comment about Beaubier’s accident or surgery when contacted by Roadracingworld.com Thursday morning. More details will be reported as they become available. UPDATE: According to Yamaha Race Team Press Officer Sean Bice, our original report that Beaubier had also broken a scaphoid bone in one hand was incorrect. More, from a press release issued by Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A.: Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha’s Cameron Beaubier Injured In Scooter Accident Cypress, CA March 29, 2012 19 year-old Cameron Beaubier, who races a Yamaha YZF-R6® for Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha in AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike, was involved in an unfortunate, one-vehicle accident while riding his Yamaha Zuma® 50 scooter on the street. He clipped an unseen hazard in the roadway and suffered a fractured right patella (kneecap), while also tweaking his right wrist. Very soon after the accident, Cameron had surgery on the patella, which involved the use of wires and screws to hold the bone together so it can heal properly. Cameron’s wrist injury did not require surgery. Commenting on the incident, Cameron said, “I’m so disappointed to have injured myself, and in such an odd manner. It happened so quickly, and I’m fortunate that there were no other vehicles around at the time. I’m not yet sure what my prognosis is for racing at Road Atlanta (April 20-22) in a few weeks, but I’m hopeful for a quick recovery.” Cameron was the quickest AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike rider overall at the official AMA Pro test held this past Tuesday and Wednesday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. When asked about his wrist injury, Cameron said, “Thankfully, there are no broken bones in my wrist. It’s sore right now, but I had it thoroughly checked out, and it’s nothing major. My knee is the issue.” Keith McCarty, Motorsports Racing Division Manager for Yamaha said, “We feel badly for Cameron. Off the track, he’s sure had his share of bad luck.” Cameron fractured the tibia on his left leg while training on a motocross bike this past Christmas Eve, and that injury is now fully healed. McCarty added, “It’s too soon to tell if Cameron will be unable to race at Road Atlanta. We’ll know more next week after he begins physical therapy so, for now, we wish him the best and remain hopeful for a quick recovery.” Be sure to follow the Yamaha U.S. Road Racing Teams on Facebook.
