Pirelli Riders Fastest in Two AMA Classes: Supersport, Superstock: Miller Motorsports Park

Michael Barnes and Geoff May, riding on Pirelli SuperCorsa Pro tires, laid down historic laps at the inaugural AMA Superbike event at Miller Motorsports Park, Tooele, Utah. It will forever be in the records books that the fastest Supersport rider, in the first official practice on the first day of the first AMA Superbike event at Miller Motorsports Park, was Michael Barnes. The times Barnes through down on his Team M4 EMGO Suzuki sponsored GSX-R600 were nearly a second faster than any other rider; nearly, like in, a tenth away from being a full second faster.

Barnes’ teammate Geoff May was close behind as the second fastest racer in Supersport practice. Behind Barnes and May were three factory machines from Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki, showing the equalizing effects of Pirelli’s latest SuperCorsa Pro tires.

In Fridays’ Superstock practice, Geoff May set the fastest time of the field on his Team M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R1000. Using a set of Pirelli’s Diablo Superbike Slicks, May carved his way around the track at a time of 1:52.010, heading a field of 36 bikes including four factory riders on competing tires.Chris Ulrich on his RoadracingWorld.com Suzuki and Matt Lynn on his Team KWS Suzuki, finished Superstock qualifying 11th and 12th fastest.

In open Superbike practice, privateer Matt Lynn, on his KWS-prepared Suzuki GSX-R1000, was again the fastest Superbike rider on Pirelli’s Diablo Superbike Slicks. Lynn set times on his Superstock-spec Suzuki so fast that he made it into the elite-15 of the “fast group” for Superbike qualifying. Lynn achieved that despite most racers on full-out Superbike-spec machines.

Lynn backed up his practice times in preliminary Superbike Qualifying, by setting the 13th fastest time. Returning from his injury at Barber Motorsports Park, Lynn’s KWS Suzuki teammate John Haner was 15th fastest, working his way further up the grid each time on track.

Friday’s Formula Xtreme practice had Michael Barnes nearly ruling that field too. Barnes set the fourth-fastest time in the first FX practice on his Team M4 EMGO Suzuki-prepared GSX-R600, mixing it up with the factory riders. In FX qualifying Barnes was sixth fastest, securing a spot on the second row of the grid for Saturday’s race.
