TEAM SUZUKISCOOPFANS’ ELENA MYERS CHARGES HARD AT MID-OHIO Myers rides two smart races & brings home fifth- and sixth-place finishes LEXINGTON, OH Team SuzukiScoopFans rider Elena Myers celebrated a strong showing in this weekend’s AMA Pro SuperSport race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, OH. Coming off of her first podium of the year at the last round, the 17-year-old rider picked up fifth- and sixth-place finishes. The races at Mid-Ohio were East Division rounds and did not affect Myers’ overall championship points standings. Although she’s contesting all the SuperSport rounds, she’s only officially campaigning the West Division, where she remains in fifth place overall. In Saturday’s race, Myers got a good launch off the line on her Team SuzukiScoopFans Suzuki GSX-R600 and when the dust had settled, she’d slotted into fifth place. She stayed put for almost all 17 laps but got passed on the last lap to take home a sixth-place finish. “Overall this weekend went pretty well,” said Myers. “It started out decent, though I wasn’t happy with how I qualified. The SuzukiScoopFans Suzuki GSX-R600 was working great and I did some pretty good times in practice, but I wound up qualifying on the third row. Even so, I got a good start on Saturday and was right there, battling for fifth. But a guy got by me at the end and I ended up sixth.” On Sunday, Myers again got a good start and found herself running in sixth position. She rode a smart, consistent race and didn’t take any chances that might affect her points standings in the West Division. The result was a solid top-five finish. “I was again battling right there with the top guys on Sunday,” said Myers. “And I ended up doing similar lap times as the guys who won, so I’m pretty happy with that. I lost touch a little bit at the end of the race and ended up fifth. But I’m looking to improve on my qualifying and not lagging back toward the end of the race. Now, we’ve got Laguna Seca in two weeks and that’s one of my home tracks. I love that place and I love the whole atmosphere of the GP Weekend. So I’m looking forward to some great racing and hopefully I can get a win.” The 2011 SuzukiScoopFans team’s next event of the 2011 AMA Pro SuperSport season will be at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA, on July 22 – 24, 2011. More, from a press release issued by Gino Rea Racing: Gino Rea ‘saved crash on elbow’ before winning maiden World Championship Race at Brno! Step Racing Honda rider Gino Rea saved a front end ‘crash’ on his elbow before going on to record his and his team’s first ever World Championship win at Brno and also post the first WSS race win for Honda in 2011. Gino, starting from fourth on the grid made his trademark ‘Speedy G’ start to push his way into the lead at the first corner. After a short battle with pole sitter and Veteran Fabien Foret, Rea took charge of the race and was leading the field on the penultimate lap as the red flag was shown. He had led for ten laps before the red flag and with the results counted back to lap 15, Rea was awarded the win by 0.448 seconds from Fabien Foret (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda). However, Rea was prepared for the final lap battle and had some pace left in reserve… “What a weekend. It hasn’t quite sunk it yet but it feels so good to get the first World Championship win for myself and the team, especially at their home race.” Gino commented. “We found a way around our qualifying and warm up technical problem just before the race, the fix was ok but I had to re-learn the bike in the first few laps. When Foret came past I just wanted to stick with him but I soon realised he was holding me up in places so I made a move” said the youngster. “I thought it would be cool to lead a Supersport race across the line for the first time but wasn’t expecting to stay there till the end. I tried to gap him straight away but I lost the front, I basically crashed but saved it on my elbow, for the second time this weekend. The front slid and my elbow scraping the tarmac was the only thing keeping me on the bike while it was lent right over, it wore a big hole in my leathers. After that I just tried to run my own race and be a bit protective of my lines, making sure I was getting good corner exits so they could not come past me down the straight and it was enough to win.” said the youngster. “I’d like to thank everybody who has helped me get here, Michael & Anatoly at Crimea Racing, Josef & team, Andy Stone, Dad & family and everybody who’s helped along the way. “And of course a huge thank you to all our fans and supporters, it’s much appreciated! See you at Silverstone!” The next World Supersport round will be a home race for Gino at Silverstone on the 31st July. Come along and see the action for yourself! More, from a press release issued by Waznie Racing: Szoke Remains Second in the Canadian Superbike Championship 5 time defending Canadian Superbike champion Jordan Szoke had to settle for a disappointing runner up finish this weekend in the Canadian Superbike Championship held at the Autodrome in St Eustache Quebec. The “Autodrome” was resurrected to the CSBK schedule from a hiatus since 2003 with a freshly paved 1.77 km road course. Szoke qualified on pole position Saturday afternoon with a 45.085 lap time aboard his Competition Systems Kawasaki ZX10 with an average speed of 141.333 km/hr. “I felt so comfortable out there.” says Szoke “I did a few hot laps and came in to make some changes with the crew, but when I took a look at my lap time I was thinking, Hey, that’s not half bad!” Jordan and the Competition Systems crew have been working tirelessly developing their brand new Kawasaki ZX10 for the 2011 season. “I think I left a little more out there, it’s nice to be back on top, and having the set up working well.” Sunday’s race found Szoke pushed back into third off the start. Quickly a 2 second gap was formed, and Jordan had to make the pass into second. This pass earned him the “Kicker Kick-Ass Pass” of the race award. Steadily lap by lap Szoke was gaining a few tenths each time around, and found himself within sniffing distance of the win with only a few laps left. “I used up my tire trying to get around at the beginning of the race, once I caught up to the lead, I just had nothing left.” says Szoke. “This was my race to win.” says a disappointed Szoke “We had the bike, we had the rider, I finally felt awesome on our new Kawasaki, but my start was poor and I just didn’t have the tire left once I made up the gap.” When asked about the rest of the season, Szoke grins and says, “We’re not finished yet, there are three rounds left and we’re going to push just as hard at each one of them. Challenging situations motivate me, so watch for us at the top of the box. We have a doubleheader at Mosport soon that I’m really looking forward to.” Watch for Szoke furiously defending his #1 plate during Round 5 of the CSBK series Aug 5-7 at Atlantic Motorsport Park. Jordan Szoke would like to thank: Waznie Racing Inc, Parts Canada, Alpinestars, HJC, Monster Energy, Competition Systems/Kawasaki, Oakley, Ogio, BK Designs, Medical Information Carrier Systems, KTech Suspension, Strodes, Just Transmissions, Bicycle Works, Robot Pirate Ninja Productions, photobOb, PUG, Gas Gas Pacific More, from a press release issued by Pirelli/CT Racing: CT RACING/Pirelli Win 14 Races at AFM Round 5: Infineon Raceway Thousand Oaks, California: Where brand is by choice, it was a great weekend for Pirelli and supplier CT RACING at the Infineon Raceway Round 5 of the AFM series, taking 14 wins and three podium sweeps in classes from liter bikes to little bikes. In the Formula Pacific fast premier class, BMW rider Chris Siglin won with a last-lap pass, showing the consistency of Pirelli’s racing rubber. Siglin took the win with Pirelli Diablo Superbike Slicks: 120/70/17 SC2 front, and the new 200/60/17 SC1 rear. Siglin said, “The tire grip was incredible all weekend long. This win means a lot to me and my team and CT RACING. We’ve been working so hard all year long.” Joey Pascarella won in 600 Superbike and 600 Production, while walking away from the field. Pascarella ran Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa DOT’s 120/70/17 SC2 and 180/55/17 SC1 for the first race, and the all-new Diablo Supercorsa 180/60/17 SC1 for his second win of the day, on his Jonblockphd.com Yamaha R6. Pascarella said, “My bike was hooked up and it showed. I felt really strong on the brakes and on the exits I could just pin it.” Owner of Pirelli distributor CT RACING, Corey Neuer, said, “From last-lap passes to race-long domination, we had a great weekend. I’m so proud of everyone. The weekend started off great with a top-four sweep in Formula AFemme, with Christie Cooley getting the win. She’s really getting fast and I admire her performance this weekend, considering how she was seriously injured four weeks ago in a bicycle race and needed sixty stitches in her hip. She put all that behind her and raced great. Joey was incredible and simply dominated the 600 classes. And I can’t say enough about Chris Siglin; the kid works so hard. He trains and races hard. He has so much heart for this sport. Pirelli is constantly updating our tires and the results prove it with fast lap times and wins from 250cc to 1000cc motorcycles. Along with our loyal customers, I have to thank the AFM for running such a good series. The team received a new electronics package from Competition Systems UK just in time for the weekend’s event. With a few minor adjustments and support from Mick Boasman from Competition Systems, Turpin managed to qualify on Pole just a few tenths in front of Dan Turner on his Suzuki GSXR1000. As the race began, Turpin was able to pull the holeshot and lead into the fast, right-hand, turn one with Dan Turner on his GSXR1000 in close pursuit. The early stage of the race saw Turner in close proximity to Turpin, just a few tenths off in second place. By half race distance, Turpin was able to extend his lead by a few seconds and bring home the win for the Boulder Motor Sports Team. Shane Turpin ” After nearly a month off, I was really looking forward to getting back on the Ducati, especially knowing the team had a new electronics package and the support from Competition Systems, Mick Boasman. We had some new suspension settings to try as well, which the team worked hard to ensure we maximized our practice time to find a great setting for the bumpy Pueblo circuit. During the race the track temperature was quite high, but coupled with the Michelin tires and the Nemesis Traction Control System, we managed to put the power down and come away with our fourth win of the year. I’d like to give a big thanks to my team, Mick Boasman, our sponsors and the entire MRA officials, especially the corner workers who endured a long weekend under mixed weather conditions.” In addition to the first place finish in Race of the Rockies, the team also placed first in Heavy Weight Superbike, first in Open Superbike and first in Middleweight Superbike. The Boulder Motor Sports team will be back in action on July 30th for Round 5 of the MRA’s 2011 season at High Plains Raceway in Byers, Colorado. More, from a press release issued by Ridersdiscount.com: Team RidersDiscount.com was on the podium in every single event they entered at Grattan Raceway Park for WERA’s first-ever Double-Header weekend. The recently repaved track was well received by all and the pace was fast with lots of action on the track. With the notably hot summer weather, tire choice critical as grip on the track surface constantly changed every day with temperatures varying from practice to the green flag. Still, Team RidersDiscount.com riders Sam Gaige, Virginie “Frenchie” Massing and Brian Gibson came away with a combined total of four wins, five second-place finishes and two third place spots on the podium. Although Gaige has been a regular with WERA for over a decade, this was his first visit to the Western Michigan track. Brian was quick straight away and it didn’t take Sam long to put his pace up at the top of the lap charts. Frenchie, another Grattan regular, found a way to take another second off her best time on her way to a win! Sam Gaige – “It was great to finally meet the entire RidersDiscount.com crew and learn a completely new track. Brian worked with me in Friday practice to get me up to speed and his knowledge helped. The guys were telling me that it’s the only place where the locals usually keep the national-level regulars honest and I can see why! That knowledge had them [the locals] dealing with lappers better than me, which cost me a few seconds here and there. Plus there were fast guys everywhere! My Markbilt-prepared, Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 ran like a champ all weekend and even though I didn’t get a win, it was the most fun I’ve had on the track in a long time! It was easy to see that the Team RidersDiscount.com crew really know bikes and it made my weekend at this new place a lot easier. The level of hospitality was totally unexpected I really want to go back. Plus the track layout is fantastic, there’s just nothing like it and I just want to come back here next year and get a few wins!” Virginie Massing “My weekend was great with a 1st place in the women’s expert class and a 3rd in Senior Superbike plus I took a second off my best time. Team RidersDiscount.com were a huge help with my Yamaha YZF-R6 and I had a great time with the whole crew. There’s something about being part of a team like RidersDiscount.com that motivates you to not only do good but also have fun while doing it. It was a really great weekend for me and the team!” Brian Gibson (owner, RidersDiscount.com) “It was a fun weekend for the whole team and although we didn’t have the superbike motor in the RidersDiscount.com Triumph Daytona 675, we still managed to put it on the top of the box in every race Saturday. It wasn’t all easy because, with the new pavement, we had to make some changes to the bike’s setup. Sunday’s race was shaping up to be a good one until the front end let go and I had a little crash in the bowl right after I set the fastest lap of the weekend up to that point. I gotta wonder what that last lap would have been hadn’t I fallen off. Other than that, it was really great to see Sam pick up the pace at Grattan where the locals usually rule the roost and Frenchie took over a second off her best time too. It was awesome to have three Team RidersDiscount.com bikes on the grid at our home track and I’m very satisfied with the results!” Team RidersDiscount.com results: Sam Gaige, Expert #20, Yamaha YZF-R6 on Dunlop tires Saturday: 2nd C Superstock 2nd C Superbike 3rd B Superstock Sunday: 2nd C Superstock 2nd C Superbike 2nd B Superstock Virginie “Frenchie” Massing, Expert #177, Yamaha YZF-R6 on Pirelli tires Saturday: 1st Women’s Superbike 3rd Senior Superbike Brian Gibson, Expert #31, Triumph Daytona 675 on Dunlop tires Saturday: 1st Heavyweight Superbike 1st B Superbike 1st Senior Superbike Sunday: DNF, crash C Superbike About RidersDiscount.com: RidersDiscount.com is a retailer of quality powersports gear, apparel and accessories. Jordan Szoke and the Competition Systems Kawasaki Race Team were in contention for the race win right to the finish of the fourth round of the Canadian Superbike Championship by Parts Canada at Autodrome St-Eustache last weekend. Riding the new Ninja ZX-10R the seven-time Canadian national champion took the Kawasaki S4-R Competition Lubricants Pole Award for Sunday’s 24-lap feature race and then finished less than 1.5 seconds shy of the race win after rebounding from a poor start. The result was Szoke’s third runner-up finish of the season and moved him into a solid second place in the Canadian Superbike Championship by Parts Canada standings with three rounds remaining in the 2011 campaign. “I had a decent start, but it wasn’t good enough,” said the Brantford, Ont. rider, who completed the opening lap in third place but moved into second on lap six. “I’m actually quite disappointed because I had a great motorcycle. But I used up my tire trying to get up into second and when I caught the leader I had nothing left. “Racing doesn’t always go as planned. But we’re right in the thick of things now and everybody knows it.” Szoke was among the pacesetters from the start of official practice on Friday. He ended the day quickest and then snatched his first pole position of the season on Saturday. “I was really comfortable the whole time,” said Szoke of his Pirelli SuperPole qualifying effort. “I felt like we’d left a little bit of speed on the table if we needed it. Once you get comfortable with the set up here you’ve got to stop worrying and just work on riding harder.” It took Szoke only seven laps around the 1.77km Autodrome St-Eustache circuit to turn the 45.085-second lap that would hold up for pole position. “I think practice and qualifying proved that Jordan was going to be very hard to beat on raceday and with a slightly better start we could have had the victory,” said Competition Systems Kawasaki Race Team manager Mike Crompton. “Looking ahead to the last three rounds, I don’t see any reason why we can’t contend for race wins and make a push for another Superbike championship.” The Canadian Superbike Championship by Parts Canada resumes at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, N.S. on Aug. 5-7 before concluding with a doubleheader at Bowmanville, Ont.’s Mosport International Raceway Aug. 19-21. Szoke swept both ends of a doubleheader at AMP last summer and has won five of the last six Superbike nationals at Mosport. The Competition Systems Kawasaki Race Team would like to thank the following sponsors for making their 2011 racing effort possible: Canadian Kawasaki Motors Inc., Parts Canada, Akrapovic Exhaust Systems, HotBodies Racing (lightweight replacement bodywork), Orient Express (supplying K-Tech Suspension components and GB racing engine covers), Vortex (supplying sprockets, rear sets, handlebars and other quality chassis parts), Dynojet Research, Kawasaki S4-R Competition Lubricants, NOCO, Performance Friction Brakes, DID Racing Chains, NGK spark plugs. More, from a press release issued by Fogi Racing Development Team: Young puts on a charge at Mid-Ohio Fogi Racing Development Team LEXINGTON, OH Thornbury, Ont.’s Ben Young overcame numerous challenges to earn another top 10 finish in AMA Superstore.com SuperSport action at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Sunday. Despite being forced to start from the back of the field due to a last minute technical mishap the rider of the Fogi Racing Development Team Yamaha YZF-R6 charged to a 10th place finish in the 17-lap race. Under similar circumstances the 18-year-old class rookie had finished 10th in his previous outing at Barber Motorsport Park. “I think we’ve shown we have the ability to run at the front in this series,” Young said. “If some of these gremlins would just leave us alone I’m confident we could make a major step forward with our results.” Set-up challenges and a lack of track knowledge kept Young down the timesheets during qualifying for the weekend’s two races and he lined up 18th on the grid. A steady run in Saturday’s 17-lap race brought him home in 16th. “I’m a little disappointed with that result,” Young admitted, “but I took two seconds off my qualifying time in that race so it shows we’ve been moving in the right direction.” A change in tire choice and suspension settings had Young and the Fogi Racing Development Team in a confident mood heading into Sunday’s race. But disaster struck when the fuel line disconnected just before the start and the bike would not fire. The problem was quickly rectified but Young missed the sighting lap and was put at the back of the grid. As at Barber, however, the teenager was able to make impressive progress through the field and was rewarded with a 10th place finish. He also turned his fastest lap of the weekend in that race. “It’s nice to be able to reward the team with another top 10 result after a challenging weekend,” Young said. “The fact that I kept dropping my lap times proves to me that once I get familiar with a track I can be very competitive, and that we are making the right decisions in set-up with our Yamaha YZF-R6.” Young left Mid-Ohio 12th in the SuperSport East point standings and within easy reach of the top 10. Young and the Fogi Development Team will resume their battle in the Superstore.com SuperSport series at Virginia International Raceway August 12-14. Ben Young and Fogi Racing Development Team would like to thank, Lean Angle, Motul, Arai, EBC Brakes, K&N, TechSpec Gripsters, MICS (Medical Information Carrier System), Turn2 Sportbike School, Arlen Ness, Vortex, Goodridge, AirTrix Paint Store, BCL Motorsports, Renthal, Infinet Designs, GP Tech, The Awning Company, Scot-Build Developments and Armour Bodies. More, from a press release issued by Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada: SAINT-EUSTACHE, Quebec (July 12, 2011) Autodrome, Saint-Eustache Round four of the Canadian Superbike Racing Series took place on the newly paved 1.7-km road course at the Autodrome, Saint-Eustache under sweltering heat on July 8 and 9. Being the shortest track of the 2011 Canadian Superbike Series, the Saint-Eustache Autodrome offered spectators some of the closest racing to date with the Harley-Davidson® XR1200® Cup. The striking leader of this class, Steve Crevier, riding #14 for MotoSport Plus of Kingston, continued his tenuous hold on the series and on Saturday’s Harley-Davidson® XR1200® Cup qualifier, he again took pole position and again was awarded the Tactical Products Canada Luminox watch for his efforts. Crevier had his hands full for the entire 20-minute session with Ruthless Racing Inc. teammates, Darren James (#29) and J.R. MacRae (#27), hot on his heels. Harley-Davidson® de L’Outaouais rider, Elie Daccache, closed the gap and looked to qualify in a solid third, but was displaced on the final lap of qualifying by a hard-charging Privateers Harley-Davidson® rider, Cody Matechuk, who had to battle from mid-pack to earn a spot on the front row of Sunday’s main event. Once again, Sunday’s final in the Harley-Davidson® XR1200® Cup was a showpiece for the series. In one of the gutsiest efforts ever, Ruthless Racing Inc. racer, Darren James, who in the morning practice session badly damaged his leg in a crash, not only competed in the race, but challenged the whole race for the lead. For his efforts, James rightfully won the Performance Under Gear “Performance of the Race” Award. Pole sitter, Steve Crevier, put the MotoSport Plus XR1200® motorcycle into the early lead, but in a daring late-braking move, Cody Matecuk, rushed to the front. The young Privateers Harley-Davidson® rider enjoyed the advantage for only a couple of laps when Crevier returned the favour by going into the front straight and regaining control. Darren James held steady in third, looking for any opportunity to pass on the tight Saint-Eustache circuit, but none came. Behind the leading pack, another battle was waging between the trio of Elie Daccache, Samuel Proulx riding for Sherbrooke Harley-Davidson®, and OV Spilboborghs, supported by Trev Deeley Motorcycles. The three riders pushed each other to the limits until they got into traffic, which turned out to be the undoing of Spilborghs. As the three moved around a lapped rider, Spilborghs got pushed wide and ran off the track and crashed, ending his challenge early. Proulx displaced Daccache to take over the fourth spot and held it to the chequered flag. While Crevier romped to another victory, Matechuk had to settle for the runner-up spot. James soldiered through his injury to earn third place. Crevier commented after the race, “They keep telling me that I’m in my fourth decade of racing, but I’m feeling like this is my first decade. These bikes are so much fun to ride and it is great to be out here racing against these kids.” The next Harley-Davidson® XR1200® Cup event will be held at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia from August 5 to 7.
