Suzuki 1st, Kawasaki 2nd, Honda 3rd, Yamaha 4th Suzuki Castrol were fastest in this afternoon’s second free practice session for the Zolder 6 Hour round of the World Endurance Championship, with Matthieu Lagrive posting a time of 1:33.835. Kawasaki Diablo’s Marco Rohtlaan improved by over a second on this morning’s time to move into second place with a 1:35.041 lap. Third place went to wildcard team Van Zon Honda (1:35.100) and fourth to Yamaha Austria (1:35.472); the top four places all went to different manufacturers. Bolliger Kawasaki were fifth (1:35.584), Yamaha Endurance Moto38 were sixth (1:35.655) and Yamaha Phase One Endurance (1:35.655) were seventh, the last of the teams to record a 1:35 lap time. Of the other marques, the SLC Moto Metiss (1:39.693) was 25th, the Redfox Ducati 999 (1:41.093) was 34th and the RVC Endurance Aprilia RSV Mille (1:46.692) was 44th. This is the second day on track for most of the teams and times are still improving significantly for many as the riders come to terms with the circuit’s changes of elevation and camber. In one section of the track bikes wheelie out of a slow-ish chicane (turn 5 and 6) then charge up a short hill, almost becoming airborne over the crest before a fast left hander (turn 7) delivers them to the second chicane (turn 8 and 9). Some riders – Diablo’s Marco Rohtlaan, for example, have adapted to the circuit quickly and this is reflected in his performance today. Each rider will get two thirty minute qualifying sessions tomorrow to decide the grid for Sunday’s race; the pressure is on to find a race set-up which works for all the riders in a team while also recording a fast lap time for qualifying.
