Sutton Charges Ahead in Points, Novice Grid Shows Promise

WMRRA Round 4, Pacific Raceways, August 11-12, 2013

The fifth round of WMRRA’s race season again saw warm weather, & the points chase in the premier class was blown wide open after points contender Mark DeGross was unable to race. During a two-up ride in which #1 plate holder, Mark DeGross, was piloting, a mechanical incident spurred a violent chain of events. The crash resulted in DeGross being unable to participate in round 5. Because of such, a top 3 overall finish just came into the reach of at least 4 other racers. DeGross is going to have to work very hard in order to take back second place from up-and-coming racer Kyle Staples.

Ryan Sutton seems to be well on his way to earning himself WMRRA’s #1 plate. By only the fifth round, Sutton has opened up a gap of 334 points to second place. Sutton charged hard all of Saturday and Sunday to claim a whole set of podiums, uninterrupted by any red flags. There seems to be nothing to stop him, but again, this is racing!

Saturday featured a large crowd signed up for WMRRA’s Taste of Racing Program. The purpose of the function is to promote road racing to street riders who wish to ride faster in a safe environment. In the 15-minute riding session, groups of riders are allowed onto the track to ride at their own pace, but are not permitted to pass a control rider at the front. Other marshals patrol the group, and demonstrate lines, encourage timid riders, and ensure the environment is kept under control. Taste of Racing allows them to find out anything they want about track days or WMRRA’s racing program.

The Washington Motorcycle Road Racing Association was formed in 1974 to organize and promote the sport of motorcycle racing in Washington State. Currently, WMRRA races at two tracks in Washington: Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington, and the newly constructed Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, Washington. To learn more, go to www.wmrra.com.
