Clear skies and warm weather made for some great racing at round 3 of the Vortex Masters of the Mountains race series hosted by the Utah Sport Bike Association June 28-29 at Miller Motorsports Park. Round 3 was held on Miller’s fast and flowing West Course configuration which provides racers with a little bit of everything including some fantastic overtaking opportunities.

Novice class standout Syrus DeJong put on an impressive display winning 4 races and taking 2nd in his 5th race. Syrus began the 2014 season by enrolling in the Utah Sport Bike Association’s Racing Experience class to get a feel for racing but after getting a taste Syrus has jumped in with both feet. Syrus DeJong is a perfect example of how a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn from those with more experience can pay off.

The Expert Middleweight classes saw a mix of winners with Chad Swain taking relatively comfortable wins in Middleweight Superstock and the premier middleweight class, King of the Mountain GTU. Middleweight Superbike and Heavyweight Superbike, however, saw some fantastic battles between David Purcell and Brian Childree, each taking a win respectively. When interviewed about his new-found competitiveness, Childree replied, “We have been struggling this season to mesh with the new bike, but we found an issue with the chassis in testing that we got fixed before this round and it’s made a huge difference. I feel a lot more confident in the bike and in my riding. I’m really looking forward to the next round!”

In the Expert Open classes Oleg Pianykh took the win in King of the Mountain GTO but it was no easy task. He was hounded by Michael Bradshaw on his BMW S1000RR and Jerry Hicks on his Suzuki GSX-R1000. The three riders paced each other around the track for over half race distance, never more than a few tenths of a second between them. The battle was fierce until lap 9 when Hicks made a small mistake in the difficult turn 6 and crashed out.

“The times we were doing were fast but I felt comfortable doing it. I just made a small mistake in 6 and at that pace, even small mistakes mean you’re done. Too bad cause I think we had something for them today,” said Hicks.

The battle continued, but in the end Pianykh held off Bradshaw for the win.
