Beach Badgers Gerloff In Wisconsin As bLU cRU Teammates Finish 1-2 In Sunday Supersport Race At Road America, While Beaubier Podiums & Hayes Finishes Fourth In Superbike Race

Elkhart, WI – June 4, 2017 – Yamaha’s “Fast Four” road racers emerged from the team’s annual pilgrimage to Road America with three race wins and three additional podium finishes.

In Sunday’s Supersport race, polesitter and Saturday race winner Garrett Gerloff battled it out for the entire race distance with his Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha teammate JD Beach. And, at the checkers, it was 2015 MotoAmerica Supersport winner JD who narrowly beat defending Supersport Champion Garrett for his third win of the season, which matches Garrett’s three wins so far this year. Both riders also have reached the podium six times apiece in 2017.

“This has been a tough weekend for me,” commented JD. “And I’ve been proud to wear Nicky’s [Hayden’s] helmet in honor of him. I want to say thank you to Monster Energy for allowing me and some other riders to wear replicas of Nicky’s helmet instead of our own with the Monster Energy logos on them. As for the race, all of us from Owensboro know not to ever give up, so that’s what I kept thinking, and I’m glad to get this win today. Thanks to my crew for giving me a really fast bike. I’m glad to be in this championship hunt and just a few points behind Garrett.”

Garrett said, “It was a good race. I got a pretty decent start. I’ve been trying to improve those, and today’s was pretty good. Going into the first turn, I hit some bumps and almost lost the front, which enabled JD to get by me. I spent the rest of the race pretty much trying to catch him. I was able to get past him a couple of times, but it looked like it was going to come down to the final lap. I kept thinking about a strategy to pass JD and win the race. But, it just didn’t work out the way I wanted it to.”

In a race that was shortened and then ended early due to two separate red-flagged incidents, Saturday’s Road America Superbike race winner Cameron Beaubier finished third in Sunday’s Superbike contest, while his Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Factory Racing teammate Josh Hayes bounced back from his warm-up lap crash on Saturday to finish a solid fourth on Sunday. All in all, it was a good conclusion to their weekend at “America’s National Park of Speed,” although not as stellar as they hoped for.

“I was pretty bummed out that the race got called after the red flag,” said Cameron. “But I’ve got to put myself in a better position earlier in the race for when things like that happen as the laps wind down. I’ve got some stuff to work on going into Utah. I need to work on my starts so I don’t always begin the race having to play catch-up. My racecraft in the early laps needs to improve, so I’ll be working on that. But, I’m glad to get on the podium today after winning yesterday. We collected a decent amount of points, and we’ll move on from here.”

Josh said, “After yesterday’s crash, I was being a little tentative, and I made it pretty easy on those guys. I didn’t really have anything for them today because I wasn’t feeling confident, and I didn’t what to end up on the ground again. Before the weekend, I said I wanted to ‘send it’ at Road America, but I didn’t really mean ‘send it’ to the dumpster. So, we’ll regroup, heal up, train hard, and be ready for Utah, which is another track that I like a lot.”

DEBISE BACK ON TARGET AT ROAD AMERICA

Team Hammer backed up a race-winning Saturday at Road America with another podium performance on Sunday to conclude Round 4 of the 2017 MotoAmerica season in a positive fashion.

While Jake Lewis was the Saturday star on the team’s Superstock-spec 2017 Suzuki GSX-R1000, Sunday was the middleweight riders’ moment to shine.

M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Valentin Debise put his season back in order with a strong and consistent ride to secure his fourth top-three of the year and halted an uncharacteristic run of misfortune.

The Frenchman got away with the Supersport leaders off the line and pulled free of any potential pursuers chasing from behind. He settled in from there to register a convincing, albeit lonely, ride to third.

Debise was relieved to get back up closer to where he and his GSX-R600 belong. He said, “This is a big improvement following two DNFs and a 14th. Third is not what I want to be, but it’s a big step back in the right direction.

“It was very important for me to finish that race. I felt I could stay with the front two but only by taking too many risks with my bike. I figured it was better to slow down, finish the race, and get the podium. We’ll step things back up next race and look to fight for more wins.”

Debise’s M4 ECSTAR Suzuki teammate Brandon Cleland also enjoyed an uptick in form. The Texan piloted his GSX-R600 to a sixth-place result in the STK600 category (13th overall) around the high-speed Road America venue.

M4 Rickdiculous Racing Suzuki’s Daytona Anderson impressed on Sunday as well. Despite riding unfamiliar equipment on an unfamiliar circuit, the up-and-coming rider battled his way to ninth-place on the overall Supersport/STK600 order, finishing as the 6th best rider on Supersport-spec equipment.

While Team Hammer’s 600cc squad rebounded nicely from a tumultuous Saturday, Sunday was Lewis’ turn to encounter turbulence.

The Kentucky native got away strongly off the line, slotting his Superstock 1000 into second overall entering the first corner of the Superbike/STK1000 contest. Still running in fourth mid-way through the opening lap, Lewis suffered a high side crash in an incident that saw the top three Superstock 1000 contenders crash.

A red flag was shown, resulting in a complete restart. Lewis managed to remount and reenter the fray from the back of the field. He recovered well enough to secure fifth in class (11th overall) before a second red flag brought the race to an early end.

Despite the Sunday drama, Lewis sits just eight points back of the Superstock 1000 championship lead.

Team Hammer will next head to Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, Utah, on June 23-25 for Round 5 of the 2017 MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Racing Championship.
