Moham, Turpin Each Win Four MRA Races At Pueblo Motorsports Park

MRA Round 4 was held at Pueblo Motorsports Park on July 9 & 10 in very hot conditions and scattered thunderstorms, causing temporary delays in the race schedule both Saturday and Sunday. The paddock was warmly welcomed by ABATE of Colorado District 7, who put on a big BBQ dinner Saturday night for the racers and their families.

The weekend got off to a lively start in the Colpar Hobbies Formula 40 class, as new riders jumped straight into the fight for the win. John Fifield on an R1 and Aaron Petrie on a CBR1000RR had a fierce, race long battle at Round 3. This time they were joined by Ed Duenez on his GSX-R1000 and big Jim Brewer on the BigStickRacing 1098R–the four swapped positions in a tight grouping throughout the F40 race. As Duenez floated his front wheel for the crowd between turns 9 and 10, Fifield fought to hold off Brewer’s ducati down the quarter mile dragstrip straightaway, nearly outbraking himself into T1 to hang onto the lead. Duenez, riding in 3rd place for several laps, was clearly enjoying himself as he continued to loft his front wheel next to the announcing tower. Then he decided to pull the trigger on his newly built 1000 motor. As the foursome again powered onto the long front straight, Duenez put his head down and made a monster pass into super fast turn 1, going around both Brewer and Fifield at once to take the lead. Petrie rode stubbornly close in 4th position, and on the next lap down the straight he watched Brewer charge by Fifield into turn 1. That last pass brought the quartet around to the checkers, with Duenez standing the Suzuki up across the line, followed closely by Brewer, Fifield and Petrie.

On Saturday the Scooter News Lightweight Grand Prix enjoyed terrific battles throughout the large field. Shannon Moham rocketed off the line to a commanding lead, while behind him riders fought one another for every position. Riding especially well was the youngest MRA racer, 13-year-old Spencer Russell on his Kawasaki Ninja 250. Russell was one of the first EX250’s off the line and attempted a block pass on quick 250 rider Tony Baker into T10, but was rebuffed and lost his drive onto the long front straight. Russell fell back into a great battle with Charlie Coyner and Lars Lofgren, and the three of them passed and repassed each other for the remainder of the race. The crowds gathered at turn 7 were thrilled when the trio came by, watching Russell make daring inside passes on Coyner into the tight “Buttonhook” on one lap, or Lofgren going around the other two to take the lead on the next. Moham brought home the win followed by Tracey Schram and Geoff Snyder, while Lofgren claimed 9th, Coyner 10th and Russell 11th, putting on a fantastic show for the spectators.

On Sunday Shane Turpin and the BMS 1198R holeshotted premier Race of the Rockies and never looked back. He set the pace for the duration, and seemed to find another gear every time a competitor tried to reel him in. Rob Christman had been cutting fast laps all weekend on his ZX-10R and looked like a possible challenger, but as the race wore on he was struggling with grip and began to fall back. Dan Turner on the Tri-City GSX-R1000, always a PMP frontrunner, moved into 2nd position and worked to close the gap on Turpin. The Dimick boys were in the fray behind the leaders on a pair of R6’s, as the BMW S1000RR had encountered mechanical problems earlier and retired. Doug Kahl slowly worked his way forward on a borrowed GSX-R1000, his own 1000 also retired with mechanical issues, and was able to pass first Colter Dimick, then Dalton Dimick. He pressed on and caught the struggling Christman, taking over 3rd position. Dalton Dimick rallied his Yamaha on the last laps and moved past Christman as well, into 4th. That was the final order at the checkers; Turpin with the win followed by Turner and Kahl, Dimick and Christman rounded out the top 5.

A special ceremony was held on Sunday to commemorate fallen MRA racer Gene Bazyl #502. Gene lost his life in an on track accident 5 years ago. After Gene’s death family and friends came together and formed the Gene Bazyl Memorial Fund, to promote track safety in the region. Many sections of new air fence were purchased which are currently in use at MRA events, and the MRA has been able to loan sections of air fence to neighboring SMRI for use at their events. The final act of the fund was to provide Gene Bazyl Memorial Scholarships to assist young racers; four were awarded on July 10th in front of the entire MRA. The recipients were Louden David, Zach Shearon, Peter Tabor and Spencer Russell. Congratulations to all four riders.

Round 5 will be July 30 & 31 at High Plains Raceway. The MRA is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual MRA 4-Hour Endurance Race on Saturday July 30th. Cash Purses will pay back to 5th in both Team and Solo Categories, information will be released later this week on payouts and rules for the event.

MRA race tickets are always $10 at the gate and kids under 12 get in free; stop by any Colorado motorcycle dealership to pick up a 2for1 gate entry. For 2011 the MRA is honoring our Armed Forces, just present military ID and get in free to all MRA races.
