Michael Dunlop edges out Guy Martin with thrilling 1000cc Race Victory in Isle of Man Steampacket Company Southern 100 – Klaffenbock/Sayle take sidecar honours with split second victory – Wayne Hamilton wins 600cc race Michael Dunlop won a thrilling Corletts Trophies 1000cc Race with a stunning last lap move on race leader Guy Martin in the first race in the Isle of Man Steampacket Company Southern 100 meeting at the Billown circuit in the South of the Island. Australian Cameron Donald fought his way from 9th on the grid to take the final podium slot. Guy Martin set the early pace, in perfect conditions, from pole position on the grid but was tracked from the off by Michael Dunlop. The pair clocked a series of laps inside the old lap record of 2:17.652, set by Guy Martin in 2008, and Martin went into the last lap of the 8 lap race with a slender 0.196 lead. He held the lead through backmarkers at Church Bends but was overtaken at ‘Stadium Bend’, just on the approach to Castletown Corner. Dunlop also took Martin’s lap record with 2:16.213 (112.324mhp) finishing with a race time of 18:23.260, just 0.121 ahead of Martin. Commenting after the race Michael Dunlop said: “I made a lunge into stadium and lost the front end and went right out onto the kerb, it was messy but held it to get through. It was a great race and I thought that Guy was away at the start but I just plugged and plugged away.” Reflecting on the move Guy Martin said: “Fair play to the boy. He was spot on. I looked back at one point and knew he was there and going into Cross Four-ways we came into some backmarkers on the last lap but no complaints. Proper race.” In the 600cc Race that ran concurrently with the 1000cc class Wayne Hamilton took the honours with 19:47.755 from Davy Morgan (19:49.740) and Lee Vernon (20:34.974). In the evening’s sidecar Race Klaus Klaffenbock/Dan Sayle took the honours after a major battle with Simon Neary/Jason Crowe and Ian and Carl Bell. At one point on the last lap of the six lap race less than a second separated the first three machines and although Klaffenbock/Sayle led for most of the race, Neary/Crowe nearly snatched a last gasp victory. Today’s schedule sees racing begin at 6.20pm with the Senior Race followed by the 250/650cc Race at 7.10pm, the 600cc Race at 8pm at the 125/400cc Race at 8.45pm. More, from a press release issued by Team Suzuki News Service: After dominating all four practice sessions at the Southern 100 on the Isle of Man, Relentless Suzuki by TAS Racing’s Guy Martin looked odds-on favourite to lift tonight’s opening race of the 2011 meeting, the Corlett’s Trophies 600/ 1000cc event. The Lincolnshire man led for seven of the eight laps, but a bold move just two corners from home saw Michael Dunlop edge him out by just a tenth of a second at the chequered flag. Both riders dipped inside the old lap record during the race and such was their pace, third-placed man Cameron Donald was over 18 seconds behind the leading duo with William Dunlop fourth and Ryan Farquhar fifth. Guy Martin: “We knackered the job on the last lap, but we’ll be all right. I had a tiny little problem on the last lap and I got caught a bit with backmarkers – no excuses mind – but we know what it is and we’ll have it fixed for the next one. We have another three or four goes here this week. We were both well inside the lap record there. We were some distance in front of the rest as you can see by the lap times. The big bike is working well and the little ‘un is flying so the job’s a good ‘un.” Corlett’s Trophies 600/1000cc Results [8 laps of the 4.25-mile Billown Circuit]: 1 Michael Dunlop [Kawasaki] 18mins 23.260; 2 Guy Martin [Relentless Suzuki by TAS] 18mins 23.381; 3 Cameron Donald [Honda] 18mins 41.865; 4 William Dunlop [Honda] 18mins 42.032; 5 Ryan Farquhar [Kawasaki] 19mins 01.918; 6 Dan Kneen [Kawasaki] 19mins 06.135.
