AMA Pro Daytona SportBike racer Melissa Paris underwent successful surgery Thursday at the hands of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Peter J. Millett at the Steadman Clinic, in Vail, Colorado.

The surgery stemmed from the broken tibia and fibula Paris suffered in a crash during an AMA Pro Daytona SportBike race at VIRginia International Raceway last season.

Paris’ injury was initially worked on by famed orthopedic surgeon Dr. Arthur Ting, who used a titanium rod and screws to stabilize her fractured tibia.

“I’ve been having a lot of pain in my knee since the accident,” Paris told Roadracingworld.com. “I just chalked that up to I broke my leg, and I figured it’s supposed to hurt. I guess Josh [Hayes, Paris’ husband] got sick of hearing me complaining about it, so we went and had it checked out. As it turns out, the rod is sticking out of the top of my tibia and it’s torn through my patella tendon.”

Paris said she and Hayes chose the Steadman Clinic based on the logistics of their racing schedules and because “all they do is lower leg injuries, as you can imagine from all the skiers in that area. And they were able to get me in on short notice.”

Reached by text message today, Hayes said Dr. Millett successfully extracted the rod, repaired damage to the patella tendon and removed some scar tissue in the knee area. Hayes reported that Paris had already started physical therapy.

“I’m really looking forward to not riding in pain, because I’ve been riding hurt all year,” Paris said prior to her surgery. “And it will be nice to train, because I haven’t been able to really train the way I like to, and my left leg is really compensating a lot. I’m ready to stop riding hurt and be healthy again.”

Paris expects to be back on board her MPH Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 at the next AMA round, July 16-18 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
