“There’s an appeal to a grand touring machine with a perfect blend of comfort and performance, all the while involving instead of isolating the rider. Especially when it delivers a visceral experience that doesn’t extract a toll on the rider’s body. Big but not too big, fast, and sophisticated, the Ninja 1000SX sport-tourer spoils the rider. It’s designed to cover a lot of miles in speed, style and comfort, as well as being capable and competent if there are more than a few twisty sections of pavement thrown in along the way.

“To put the mature Ninja through its paces, I rode it for weeks through the streets of Los Angeles, along the highways of much of Southern California, and then, needing a break from plague worries and wanting some fun too, pointed it towards Las Vegas and then the Grand Canyon…”

—Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX, Grand Touring To The Grand Canyon, by Editor-At-Large Michael Gougis

Refinement would describe Kawasaki’s approach to the latest iteration of the Ninja 1000SX. It occupies a particular niche in the company’s sport-touring line-up, surrounded by the sportbike Ninja ZX-10R—which is not a bad bike at all for covering distances—the Concours 14 and the supercharged Ninja H2 SX SE+. The Ninja 1000SX falls toward the supersport end of the spectrum, its weight and overall size closer to a sportbike than a tourer. Editor-At-Large Michael Gougis put the bike through its paces in its natural habitat, while Racing Editor Chris Ulrich then took it to the track at Auto Club Speedway—with saddlebags!
