Justin Miest Wins CRA Overall Championship At Brainerd International Raceway

Nielsen Racing’s Justin Miest Dominates Central Roadracing Association’s Overall Championship.
Brainerd International Raceway
9/20 -9/22

On September 20-22 the Central Roadracing Association hosted its 5th and final event of the 2019 season on the infamous Donnybrooke configuration at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, MN. The event included action packed sprint races, the honorary Framstad Cup (tortoise vs. the hare race in memory of Don Framstad), and an annual 5-hour endurance race.

The talk of the paddock was all about Nielsen Racing’s Justin Miest, who entered round 5 with over a 500 point lead in the Expert championship over runner up Brian Hebeisen of Fisk Bro’s Racing. Miest continued to add to his point total by taking home wins in both Middleweight and Heavyweight superbike expert classes during Saturday’s sprints. He ended the weekend having gained the most points in CRA history and securing the #1 expert plate for the 2019 season.

In the novice ranks, junior racer Brady Fors was in nothing short of excellent form on his beautiful Spears Racing/Podium Finishes Yamaha R3. Brady won all his races in the novice Featherweight and Ultralight classes, and even managing to sneak past expert racers Justin Miest and Brian Rogers on one occasion. By the end of Saturday, Brady had won his 20th race in a row, crowning him the #1 novice plate. He is also 1 of 2 racers to attempt practice during a monsoon which left carnage across the racetrack Saturday morning.

Saturday’s sprints were action packed with exciting wet and dry racing. Expert racers Justin Ebnet and Jordan Imrie took advantage of mother nature’s mishap and braved the VHT covered front straight away to take commanding wins in Middleweight Supersport and Heavyweight Supersport respectively. The Lightweight Superbike and GP classes were dominated by recruited ringer and man from down under, Rennie Scaysbrook. Brian Hebeisen also pulled out a win against MotoAmerica racer and former CRA President Jon Champ in a nail biting finish during Lightweight Supersport. In the big boy Unlimited class, it was a constant swap of domination between friends Jesse Nelson and Jake Schmotter, each taking wins on their beautiful Yamaha R1’s.

Sunday’s Framstad cup is an annual honorary race where the top 3 finishers in all the GP races are eligible to enter. Bikes from varying classes are released from the grid based on their average lap times with the intent that they all cross the finish line at the same time. The race was nothing short of exciting; the Ninja 300’s and Yamaha R3’s were passing the start finish just as the last Unlimited bikes were released, starting them a lap down. In the end it was the Wisconsin native and MotoAmerica Twins Cup racer Daniel Mataczynski that snuck past the Zorbaz pizza slinger Jeff Quam to take the win. Word has it Daniel ran around the paddock in celebration with nothing but a little hat with a dorky spinner on top.

The 5-hour endurance race brought out some amazing talent from all over the globe. Local racer and world traveler Kris Skellenger spared no expense and formulated his motorcycle dream team that was backed by Kramer Motorcycles USA – they ended up taking the win in the GP2 class. The GP3 class showed a valiant effort by team Sand Law PLLC, but their mechanicals left them in 2nd next to Team Hawaii, who not only took the GP3 win, but also the overall win. In GP4, the Schmotter Motion/Cheap Thrills Motorsports guys were expected to win the race but experienced a bit of bad luck at the halfway point when their A bike caught fire, and B bike got sent flying over the wall in turn 1. Luckily everyone from that team was okay and in good spirits. The Riders of Misfit Toys, backed by TenRacing Dunlop Motorcycle Tires took the win in GP4 with team Evil Pumpkin taking a close second place.

The Central Roadracing Association would like to thank all the volunteers that have contributed their time and effort into the season. It couldn’t have been done without them. Thank you.
