At the pointy end of our ECU/IMU-moderated 200-horsepower engines and computer-modeled chassis, we have the humble pneumatic tire.

Although modern tires would be clearly recognizable by last century engineers as, well, tires, the black art of chemistry and catalysts has allowed modern tire designers to craft an array of multi-compound dynamic-carcass tires in the pursuit of the same goal: Sticking well while lasting as long as possible.

On the race track that useful life is measured in minutes, while on the road we want tires where tire life can be measured in thousands of kilometers (or miles). Of course, bike designers make life hard on tires by stacking on the horsepower and narrowing up the engines so riders can lean further and deliver ever increasing amounts of torque to the rear contact patch. In every system there are different parameters which usually work in opposition to each other…

Pirelli set out to build an improved version of the company’s already excellent hypersport tire, one that has durability for the highway, race tire grip for the corners and, best of all, would allow us to take a bike straight from a mountain road to a racetrack without swapping tires. That tire is the Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV Corsa (DR4C), and Sam Fleming’s impressions of it after blasting though Italian roads and on the track at Mugello are in the latest issue of Roadracing World!
