When I was a kid in the 1980s, some teams enjoyed years of success by stealing bases, executing the hit and run, laying down sacrifice bunts, scoring runs with the squeeze play, and winning games by the score of 3-2.

           “That was a different time, and over the years professional baseball team owners realized that fans were no longer buying as many tickets to watch players bunt the ball—even if that did lead to wins and World Series Championships. The new generation of fans wanted a spectacle. They wanted to see home runs, so team owners created teams and built stadiums to cater to the new fans.

          “Harley-Davidson, like professional baseball team owners from the past, found a successful formula of creating a certain style of product for a certain segment of the market, and they did it for a long time. But those customers are aging out, and in order to attract new customers and survive into the future, Harley-Davidson needed to come up with something new, something bigger and better—a motorcycling home run…”
