Happy 92nd Birthday To Former Racer And Long-Time Race Starter “Airborne Al” Wilcox

Milestone in Motorcycle Racing! Former Harley Davidson factory racer and “Starter to the the Stars” for over 50 years, Al Wilcox of Trenton, New Jersey celebrates his 92nd birthday on January 4, 2011. His lifetime dedication to motorcycle racing is phenomenal. Al has flagged WERA races for over 34 years, along with Team Hammer’s first, 50th, and 100th wins, AMA Pro races from the 60’s through the 70’s. He is currently the official starter for Motorcycle Xcitement Track Days and Racing School. In his racing days. Al Wilcox finished third overall in the 1947 Daytona 100 mile race on the Beach with 150 racers starting. This was Al’s first professional race as an AMA novice! In 1948, Walter Davidson handed Al a note to be at the next race ready to race a factory Harley. Al raced for the factory from 1948 – 1951 and raced as AMA National # 49 for 15 years. Al Wilcox raced the beach course 11 times. He raced at over 360 tracks in the USA and Canada and started in over 3,000 races! In 1957, Al Wilcox was rated number 5 in the nation for speedway racing. Al has been a motorcycle race promoter, past President of the Reading Motorcycle Club, inductee to the Speedway Hall of Fame, nominee to the AMA Hall of Fame, recipient of the prestigious MARRC Cup, and is a life member with the AMA, MARRC, and Motorcycle Xcitement. AL Wilcox is also the first member in the Motorcycle Xcitement Hall of Fame. In 2001 at Summit Point Motorsports Park, the Al Wilcox Start-Finish Line at Summit Point Raceway was dedicated with a cool iron and stainless steel sign to mark the spot. During Daytona Bike Week this year, we will celebrate with the dedication of the AL Wilcox plaque on the wall at the prestigious Daytona 200 Monument on the beach and boardwalk, behind the Daytona Hilton.
