March 2013 marked a turning point in my life; a point I’d be changed forever. After years of meeting with specialists, cold hospitals and what seemed like endless testing, I was diagnosed with two types of Muscular Dystrophy. Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy Type 2L (LGMD2L) and Distal Miyoshi Myopathy (MMD3), two diagnoses I couldn’t even pronounce or spell… This was the rest of my life. For those of you who aren’t familiar, this is a degenerative disease that affects mostly the quad, the bicep and the chest muscles. There is no medical treatment. I, a man at only 32 years old, who had always been active, would continue to gradually lose mobility. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to accept. My biggest passion in life has always been two wheels. Riding motorcycles and bicycles has brought me more joy than I could ever imagine; the open roads, the speed, the camaraderie. It has been a shared passion with both my dad and my brother; years of bonding and friendship. It is about more than just bikes. It is about an experience that defines me. It was hard to believe, with my strength steadily declining, there may be a day where I will not be able to ride a bike again. It is a daily struggle but I find comfort in believing. I find comfort knowing that the people around me believe in me too. This shirt is a symbol of faith. A reminder that no matter what happens to us, this life is full of possibility. We have a choice, to define life or let it define us. In sharing my story, I gain a sense of renewed strength. I wish for nothing more than to INSPIRE others to overcome, no matter your obstacle.
