Eddie Lawson and Lyn St. James Highlight Racers at Charity Challenge at Sonoma Raceway SONOMA, Calif. — Several high-profile racing legends will grace the Sonoma Raceway road course during the Classic Sports Racing Group Charity Challenge, Oct. 5-6. Four-time Grand Prix motorcycle World Champion Eddie Lawson will join the field during the Charity Challenge piloting an Osella PA 3/5. Lawson, who is widely considered one of the greatest motorcycle road racers of all time, was inducted into both the Motorcycle Hall of Fame (1999) and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (2002). Since retiring from motorcycle racing in the early 1990s, Lawson has raced Indy cars and shifter go-karts. Veteran open-wheel racer Lyn St. James will also hit the track in an ex-factory Trans-Am Boss 302 Mustang, which won the 1970 Trans-Am Series championship. St. James is one of just seven women to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 and the first woman to be named the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year (1992). The CSRG Charity Challenge is a celebration of historic car racing with approximately 200 vintage racecars set to grace the road course over the weekend. The event will feature 1950s sports cars and marques like Maserati, Ferrari, Porsche, Lotus and will include several well-known American “Specials” from the Golden Era of U.S. sports car racing, as well as a full array of formula cars, Trans-Am and production sports cars. Other highlighted entrants include Francois Castaing, 27-year veteran automotive executive with Renault, American Motors and Chrysler. Castaing is credited for developing the all-new line of cars and trucks that have paced Chrysler’s surging success in recent years. Castaing was named “Man of the Year” by the French publication Le Journal de l’Automobile for his exemplary success in the United States and was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2010. Adding to the lineup of drivers are Sausalito’s John Hildebrand, father of INDYCAR driver and Formula Drift competitor JR Hildebrand, in his 1968 Chevy Camaro and Drew Alcazar, Chief Executive Officer of Russo and Steele Collectible Auto Auctioneers, who will pilot a Ford Shelby Mustang GT350. This incredible weekend will feature eight race groups with qualifying and races on Saturday and Sunday slated for the 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course. Tickets can be purchased at the gate and are $25 each day or $40 for a two-day pass.
