Experts David Hurtado and Mikey Shreve each won a race last Sunday, May 15 at Arroyo Seco Raceway in Deming, New Mexico. In the premier event Formula Arroyo sponsored by Evan Steel Performance, Shreve sat on pole position with last round’s winner Jason Brown and Thibault Few gridded second and third, respectively. Hurtado, tied for first in the series with Brown and ahead of Shreve in second by a single point, was gridded dead last as he suffered damage to his Kawasaki ZX-10R’s radiator in a late practice session and was unable to partake in the qualifying session.

After two first lap crashes, the first involving Joe Janiga and Josh Kauffman and the second a low side of Ken Murray, the race was red flagged twice, the third attempt was the charm as Brown and his Suzuki GSXR1000 once again demonstrated his take off talent and nabbed the hole shot. Shreve and his Yamaha YZF-R1 stormed past Few and his ZX-10R on the back straight, setting his sights on Brown. Hurtado was determined to not let the leading pack get away and clawed his way into third when he passed Few in the Horseshoe on the third lap.

Brown seemed to lose some steam during the fifth lap as Shreve snatched the lead with an outside pass in the Carousel, and Hurtado once again took advantage of his impressive corner speed in the Horseshoe where he passed Brown two laps later. The top three retained their positions for the remaining six laps of the race, with Hurtado chopping away at Shreve’s lead, until the very last lap when Shreve was slowed by lapped traffic and then passed by Hurtado in the Carousel.

Hurtado’s margin of victory was 0.046 of a second; he also set the fastest lap of the race, a personal best for the 2014 champion, with a 1:08.323. Shreve’s best lap was a 1:08.629, and for Brown, a 1:08.793.

In the Unlimited Superstock sponsored by kurveygirl.com, Hurtado, Brown, and Shreve occupied the front row of the grid. First into the Horseshoe was none other than Brown, with Shreve, Few and Hurtado in his wake. With more drive on the back straight, Brown held Shreve at bay until the fourth lap when Shreve’s late braking helped him slip past Brown near the exit of the back straight. Hurtado overtook Few on lap five in the Horse Shoe, and repeated the same outside passing maneuver on Brown a lap later in the very same place. With two laps remaining, Hurtado closed the gap on Shreve, but Shreve held on and met the checkered first by a margin of 0.354 seconds.

David Hurtado:

“I put my head down all race (in the Formula Arroyo) and wanted it. You have to want it. My start went real well, and I was able to pass a couple riders. Late braking into the Carousel and Horseshoe helped (get back to the front). I’m coming back for that #1 plate I lost last season after missing a few races. I just want to go faster.”

Mikey Shreve:

“(During testing) I got comfortable with the front forks, thanks to Phil Allison’s help at Evan Steel Performance. I was texting with him all day while he was away in New Jersey. I was able to gain confidence and become more focused on getting a good drive. I’ve raced middleweights for so many years and am now starting to find my way with this liter bike.”
