Cleland Wins Five CMRA Races At MotorSport Ranch, In Cresson, Texas

Brandon Cleland swept the competition going five for five during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) sixth round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints this past Sunday, July 24, on the 1.7-mile clockwise course at MotorSports Ranch in Cresson, Texas.

A second day of hot weather and a stiff breeze with temperatures in the high 90’s to low 100’s and a high heat index continued to make for grueling conditions and fast lap times. Cleland hammered down, riding his RES-prepped, Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 to the wins in M4 – Formula 1 Expert, 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert, B Superbike Expert, C Superbike Expert, and South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert.

For the Lightweights, Daniel Adams rode his Suzuki SV650 for the wins in D Superstock Expert, Century Trucks and Vans – Formula 2 Expert, and Century Trucks and Vans – D Superbike Expert. Adams turned a fastest of lap of 1:20.124 on lap 3 of the D Superbike race.

Morning qualifying for Sunday’s headline race, M4/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert was exciting, with lap times in the mid to high teens, with Brandon Cleland, Brandon Young riding his Suzuki GSX-R1000, James Camacho on his Yamaha YZF-R6, and Craig Montgomery also on a Suzuki GSX-R1000 grabbing the top the spots.

With the 23-bike grid lined up, Cleland had pole position, with Young in the middle, and Camacho on the inside of the front row. The start lights went out, and they were off. The pack charged into Turn One, with Camacho in the lead, Cleland stalking him, Young and Montgomery neck in neck, as the rest of the pack sorted itself out. Cleland dove up the inside to take the lead from Camacho as Young edged Montgomery. Garet Tomlinson riding hard on a Yamaha YZF-R6 was duking it out with Alonzo Contreras aboard a Suzuki GSX-R600. Joseph Caruso, on his BMW S1000RR, was going at it hammer and tongs with Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Nick Doolan and Honda CBR600RR mounted Ron Mears. Brett Heim, astride a BMW S1000RR was another bear swatting bees, as he wrestled with Jorden Pence and Jaret Nassaney, both on Yamaha YZF-R6s.

Cleland threw down a 1:15.432 on Lap 3 as he thundered down the track, with Camacho turning a 1:16.194 in pursuit and Tomlinson holding fast with a 1:16.425. The heat began to show, with some mishaps beginning on Lap 2, as competitors started having mechanicals or tip overs. Tomlinson tucked the front partway through the lap, with another competitor having a ride off, leaving Contreras to contend with Montgomery and Young. As the race wore on, the battles back and forth left spectators on the edge of their seats as Camacho continued his determined pursuit of Cleland, while the rest of the pack fought it out. The climbing temperatures were wearing competitors down, and Contreras succumbed, retiring early on Lap 8. Camacho made another charge at Cleland, and ended up tucking the front, sliding off the track unhurt.

On the final lap of the race, Cleland rode even harder, taking the checkers a solid 6.170 seconds over Young. Young crossed the line next, followed by Montgomery, Caruso, and Doolan. Mears, Heim, Pence, Nassaney, and Carl Price rounded out the top ten. Cleland also took the P1 Racing $100 purse for being the first 600 rider across the line.

Top Novice Terence Ladner rode his Yamaha YZF-R1 to four wins in OnRoad OffRoad Suspension – A Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – A Superbike Novice, SpeedFreakDecals.com – Formula 1 Novice, and Crazy Jack’s Powersports – Formula 40 HW Novice, turning a fastest lap of 1:20.545 on Lap 3 of the A Superbike race.

The Jennifer Millsap “Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A. C. Horn, went to Shandra Crawford for her combined finishes aboard her Triumph Daytona 675R.

Craig Montgomery was the winner of the new “Racer’s Race” award for overcoming a bunch of mechanical issues on his A bike, and switching to his back up bike to still compete, grabbing three podiums out of his three races, with a first in Team 60 HW, and second in RaceworX – A Superstock Expert, and third in M4 Exhaust – Formula 1 Expert on his Suzuki GSX-R1000.
