Canadians Sherstan and Decker grab Masters of the Mountains championships

(Miller Motorsports Park, Tooele UT October 2, 2011) Jesse Sherstan overcame round 6 bad luck to grab a victory and the championship in the Masters of the Mountains’ premier King of the Mountain GTO class at Miller Motorsports Park. Sherstan earned the right to run the coveted #1 plate for the 2012 season.

“This past weekend was really where the whole year came together for us,” said Sherstan. “We’ve been learning all year on the big bike and improving as we go. The bike just worked better the harder I rode it. We were a bit worried since blowing a motor at the previous round, but a huge thanks goes to Scott Jensen for letting us use a motor and installing it in our bike with Kory Cowan from Intermountain Racer Supply. The first time we had any new tires on the bike was race time on Sunday, and as soon as the fresh Pirellis hit the pavement there was no looking back.

“A huge thanks to my parents for their continued support, Kory Cowan for providing the motorcycle that helped me take the number one plate, Aaron Clark for his great trackside knowledge and setup help, and of course Scott Jensen from Moto Garage for the motor for the final round. I can’t forget to thank all my sponsors: TG Transport, Intermountain Racer Supply, Pirelli USA, AXO, Arai, Galfer, and FMX Optics.”

Scott Decker finished the season with near domination of the middleweight classes, taking the checkered flag and season championship in King of the Mountain GTU.

“I came into this weekend thinking all we needed to do was finish strong to lock all four championships. I knew I should be OK but then I heard there a lot more people coming down and Jesse (Sherstan) chose to run KOM-U again. I figured I couldn’t crash out but I would sure like to give it back to Jesse after his round 5 win,” said Decker. “I mounted a new rear Dunlop for the race and tried to convince myself to take it easy, but my urge for revenge took over when the flag dropped. I put my head down and crushed off 2:58 laps. I looked back and couldn’t see anyone, and I thought keeping it on 2 wheels would be good, winning by 19 seconds. It was a great weekend we got our payback and won the championship with an exclamation point. I also have to send out a Congrats to the New #1 plate holder Jesse Sherstan. Good job, this year you definitely earned it. Team Canada took seven championships between the two of us.

“I would like to thank Eric Dorn from EDR for my absolutely untouchable missile of a 600. I also want to thank my family for everything and new Dunlop guy Oscar Solis as well as Barry Wressel KFG Dave at GP Suspensions, Scott Larsen and Kory Kowan. I would also like to mention it was nice to see a bigger turn out to the club as Miller is the absolute best race track in North America and people need to come out, it’s amazing.”

The seven-race Mountains series, developed by Miller Motorsports Park, organized by the Utah Sportbike Association (UtahSBA) and sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), was created to encourage competitive road racing at the club and regional levels. In its seventh year, the series has quickly turned into a premier event drawing top-level talent from around the nation.
