Buchan versus Dixon: 0.005s between the pair after free practice two

Danny Buchan launched to the top of the times in the second Bennetts British Superbike Championship free practice session at Knockhill, firing the FS-3 Racing Kawasaki to the fastest time in the closing stages, holding off last year’s double race winner Jake Dixon by just 0.005s with the top 17 riders covered by 0.9s.

A frantic second session initially had Leon Haslam leading the way, but the JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider put himself out of free practice two with a crash at turn one at the midway point, leaving him ninth on the timesheet at the chequered flag.

A total of 11 riders were faster than the outright lap record of Michael Laverty but the Tyco BMW rider did have his turn at the top of the times briefly, but then Dan Linfoot set his best lap of the day to put Honda Racing ahead.

Linfoot’s spell at the top was short lived though as Dixon then toppled him from the leading position, but Buchan still had more in reserve and he grabbed his place at the top and although there were more fast laps fired in at the end of the session, it was enough to hold on to P1.

Dixon was second ahead of Laverty and Linfoot with Richard Cooper surging up the order in the closing moments to be the fastest of the Buildbase Suzukis in fifth place. The battle of the Irwins continued and it was Andrew ahead in the final 20 minutes after Glenn crashed out earlier in free practice two before rejoining the session.

Glenn Irwin then moved into sixth, just ahead of Andrew with 0.015s between the brothers on the Be Wiser Ducatis. Bradley Ray completed the top eight on the Buildbase Suzuki with Christian Iddon completing the top ten on the second of the Tyco BMWs.

Danny Buchan

(FS-3 Racing Kawasaki)

Fastest in free practice two

“I feel good, especially to have set the fastest ever lap of Knockhill and to be honest it felt like it came pretty easily. We did a test here on my practice bike to blow the cobwebs off and that was positive and then we started here on the FS-3 Racing Kawasaki race bike and we were fast straight away.

“All credit to the team, we knew we were competitive, but I did a good run and that lap wasn’t like a qualifying session where you take your brain out and go for it.

“That is ideal and we are working towards race two but it feels great to be up the sharp end that’s for sure. I am building momentum and I am going to bed with a smile on my face now!”
