2018 AMA Road Race Grand Championship kicks off Oct. 25

Amateur road racing championship returns to Barber Motorsports Park

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The nation’s best amateur motorcycle road racing talent converges on Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala., Oct. 25-28, for the 2018 AMA Road Race Grand Championship.

The event, operated by WERA Motorcycle Roadracing, is the premier amateur national road racing championship in the United States. Racers compete across 13 classes that cover a wide range of road racing motorcycles. Class winners are recognized as AMA National Champions and are awarded AMA National No. 1 plates.

The 2018 event runs concurrently with WERA’s popular Grand National Finals event.

“We are excited to get the AMA Road Race Grand Championship underway,” AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant said. “The event represents the pinnacle of amateur road racing competition in the United States, and I expect the racing to be as intense as ever. WERA does a fantastic job operating the event, and the exceptional facilities at Barber Motorsports Park make it a great venue for a national championship.”

In addition to class championships, four AMA racing awards will be determined at the event, including the Nicky Hayden AMA Road Race Horizon Award. The honor recognizes the rider best prepared for the professional ranks, based on attitude, enthusiasm and past performance.

Also up for grabs will be awards for the AMA Novice Road Racer of the Year, AMA Youth Road Racer of the Year and AMA Vet/Senior Road Racer of the Year.

All class champions and award winners will be honored at the AMA Championship Banquet on Dec. 8, as part of AMA Legends & Champions Weekend in Columbus, Ohio.

The AMA Road Race Grand Championship is open to both novice and expert road racers. For 2018, a new 300 Superstock class will replace the Formula 3 class, featuring small-displacement motorcycles like those that are raced in the MotoAmerica Junior Cup.

“We are looking forward to having the AMA Road Race Grand Championship join us again at the 2018 WERA Grand National Finals at Barber Motorsports Park,” WERA CEO Evelyne Clarke said. “It is fitting that AMA crowns its national road racing champions at an event where WERA crowns more than 60 of its own champions.”

Barber Motorsports Park is an 880-acre facility located about 15 miles east of downtown Birmingham, Ala., and is renowned for its manicured appearance and immense vintage motor sports museum. Racers will compete on the facility’s picturesque, yet technical, 2.38-mile, 17-turn road racing circuit.

Pre-event registration closes Oct. 15. Competitors may also register at the event. For more information, including the event schedule and rulebook, visit www.wera.com or contact WERA at (770) 720-5010 or [email protected].
