Michael Jordan Motorsports Suzuki’s Aaron Yates will not be returning to AMA Pro Racing National Guard Superbike action anytime soon, according to his team. Yates, a former AMA Supersport and Superstock Champion, suffered a broken right lower leg after he crashed during a warm-up session March 28 at Auto Club Speedway and was inadvertently run over by a rider who was following Yates closely. The Georgian had surgery that same night, but as he enters the fourth month of his recovery, Yates is not expected to return to action until after the next two back-to-back AMA rounds — July 16-18 at Mid-Ohio and July 23-25 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. “I just saw him yesterday. We were at a National Guard thing,” Jordan Suzuki Team Manager Pete Mauhar told Roadracingworld.com Tuesday. “He’s still on crutches. He still hasn’t put weight on it, so he’s a no for Mid-Ohio and Laguna, for sure.” According to Mauhar, Yates is due to get X-rays to access how his fractured tibia and fibula are healing and if given approval could start putting weight on his leg as soon as next week, but that would only start the next phase of his recovery. “I think once he gets that OK he is four to six weeks away,” said Mauhar. “We’re hoping [he will be back] for maybe Virginia, maybe New Jersey. It’s hard to say with those injuries. I think they’re telling [Valentino] Rossi six months, right? And Aaron’s break was about the same thing that Rossi had. “But his spirits are up and he looks good. He’s just trying to obey his doctor’s orders to not put any weight on it.” Mauhar went on to confirm that young Canadian Brett McCormick will continue riding the #23 Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000 in Yates’ place at Mid-Ohio and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
