The 2001 Isle of Man TT was officially called off today by the Man government.

At issue is the potential spread of Hoof and Mouth Disease to livestock on the island, which has to date remained free of the disease now ravaging herds in England and continental Europe.

Government spokesmen said there was no way to properly disinfect the huge crowds of visitors–and their vehicles–drawn to the Island by the annual event.

The loss of tourist revenue caused by the cancellation was the lesser of two evils when compared to the potential loss of livestock herds built up over decades, according to farmers.
