Nicky Hayden crashed early in the race on lap six, continued, but had to retire on lap 10.

Mike Smith crashed under the bridge before turn 12. Smith’s Harley-Davidson VR1000 burst into a fireball on the old pit lane entrance. Smith walked away from the crash.

Pascal Picotte retired early with mechanical problems.

Suzuki scored a second sweep of the podium in as many days. Mladin, Yates, Eric Bostrom, and Hacking battled for the lead for the first half of the event on a dry track with threatening skies. Bostrom and Hacking faded back slightly as the race wore on. Yates challenged Mladin for the lead several times under braking for turn 10 and coming down the hill to turn 12, but Mladin held on for a 0.758-second margin of victory. Mat Mladin is the “Big Kahuna” for the second year in a row.
