Yoshimura Suzuki’s Aaron Yates took the win in Sunday’s red-flag-shortened AMA Superstock race at Virginia International Raceway. Yates was chased closely by Kawasaki’s Roger Hayden, until the race was stopped on lap 14 due to a bad crash on the front straightaway involving Lion Racing Suzuki’s Jake Holden. Holden’s front tire made contact with the rear tire on Jason Pridmore’s Michael Jordan Motorsports Suzuki at about the finish line on the kinked front straight, and Holden crashed at high speed. Pridmore did not fall. Speed traps caught the pair at about 165 mph as they made contact, moments before the crash. The race was called complete, and Yates was declared the winner by 0.5 second over Hayden. Yamaha’s Jason DiSalvo, who is riding injured, finished a relatively distant third. The win extends Yates’ Championship lead over DiSalvo to 21 points, 301 to 280, with one race remaining. Holden was transported by ambulance to a hospital in nearby Danville after a medevac helicopter slated to take Holden to Duke University Hospitals in Durham reported that low cloud cover made landing at VIR impossible.
