Geoff May, Jason DiSalvo and Dave Estok topped American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) qualifying Saturday at Daytona International Speedway. Riding his Pirelli-equipped, AMA Supersport-spec Team M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600, May was fastest in Sportbike qualifying with a 1:44.334. Also qualifying on the Sportbike front row was May’s teammate Michael Barnes (1:44.979), Arclight Suzuki’s Jeff Wood (1:45.346) and Argo Cycles’ Scott Greenwood (1:46.754). May, Barnes and Wood all rode 2006-model GSX-R600s, while Greenwood rode his 2005-spec Kawasaki ZX-6R. May also earned the pole position in Speedscreen Unlimited Grand Prix qualifying with a time of 1:41.382 on his Pirelli-fitted GSX-R1000 AMA Superstock bike. Leo Vince/Pegram Racing Honda’s Larry Pegram qualified second on his Michelin-shod CBR1000RR Superbike with a 1:42.771. DiSalvo was third-quickest with a time of 1:42.940 on his factory Yamaha YZF-R6 AMA Formula Xtreme racer. Millennium KWS Suzuki’s John Haner earned the final spot on the Unlimited GP front row with a time of 1:43.407 on his Pirelli-tired GSX-R1000. DiSalvo was the fastest qualifier in (600cc) Superbike on his Dunlop-slick-equipped Yamaha YZF-R6. DiSalvo’s factory Yamaha teammates Eric Bostrom (1:43.067) and Jamie Hacking (1:44.256), however, second- and third-fastest, respectively, were disqualified when they failed to report to post-qualifying weigh-in. This promoted Barnes (1:45.155), who rode an AMA Formula Xtreme-spec GSX-R600, to second on the grid. May (1:45.179) was third-fastest on his AMA Supersport-spec GSX-R600, and defending ASRA Superbike and Sportbike Champion Wood (1:45.250) will start fourth Sunday. The fastest rider in Thunderbike qualifying was veteran Steve Crevier, who turned a 1:49.695 on his Pirelli-shod Deeley Buell XB-RR Firebolt. Crevier’s time was disallowed, however, as he had failed to actually sign-up for the class. This promoted defending ASRA Thunderbike Champion Dave Estok (1:51.263) to pole position on his Millville/Wildwood Buell XB12R Firebolt. Beside Estok on the front row of the Thunderbike grid Sunday afternoon will be Hal’s Performance Advantage Buell’s Dan Bilansky (1:52.401), Buell of Frederick’s Bryan Bemisderfer (1:555.205) and Sound Waves’ Sam Rozynski (1:55.467). Main Line BMW’s Nate Kern turned a fast enough time (1:54.539) on his BMW R1100S to put him third on the front row, 1:54.539, but he forgot to change his CCS number to his ASRA number for the qualifying session, as instructed to do at the rider’s meeting, and all of his times were disallowed.
