Last Sunday Geoff May crashed when he hit Jamie Hacking’s crashed Kawasaki during the AMA Supersport race at Barber Motorsports Park. May’s Team M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600 ramped off of Hacking’s prone ZX-6R and launched itself and May high into the air. May estimated that he traveled “at least 100 feet” before he landed on the front straightaway of the track. His right hip and elbow hit the asphalt first. A trip to the track’s medical center for X-rays confirmed that he escaped with no bone fractures, but he did suffer a hematoma that caused his right hip to swell to the size of “a volleyball.” The swelling subsided over the last few days, allowing May to run Wednesday evening “to loosen things up and get the blood moving around in my thigh” and to ride during promoter practice Thursday at California Speedway. “I’m about 95%,” said May, who matched his 2006 qualifying time of 1:26.1 during Thursday’s practice. “Maybe I’m about 99%.”
