American Cameron Beaubier, 14, a race winner in the 2007 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, has been selected to attend the Red Bull MotoGP Academy in 2008. “I can’t wait!” Beaubier told Roadracingworld.com Thursday. “It’s awesome! Just being able to race in Europe, and then to be able to stay over there is incredible. The Rookies Cup has been awesome and has got me so much exposure.” After the 2007 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup finale at Valencia, Beaubier said, representatives from Red Bull sat down, one-on-one, with each participant to tell them what plans, if any, Red Bull had for them. Some will return to the Rookies Cup in 2008. Others will go home to race on their own. Beaubier was told he would join fellow American Patrick P.J. Jacobsen in the Red Bull MotoGP Academy. Johann Zarco, the 2007 Red Bull Rookies Cup Champion, was also appointed to the Academy, according to Beaubier. The Red Bull MotoGP Academy is a relatively new program set-up by MotoGP rights holders Dorna to groom the best of the best young riders for careers in World Championship road racing. The program is led by former 500cc GP World Championship racer Alberto Puig, who has served as mentor for Dani Pedrosa for several years. The Academy riders are trained in racecraft, psychology, physical fitness and language skills. They also train by riding in various disciplines of motorcycling and do several road race tests throughout the year. Their primary mission is to progress by competing in the highly-competitive Spanish 125cc National Championship and earn wild card appearances in the 125cc World Championship and eventually earn full-time rides. A recent Red Bull MotoGP Academy graduate is England’s Bradley Smith, who rides for the Repsol Honda factory team. 2006 USGPRU 125cc Champion Jacobsen joined the Red Bull MotoGP Academy in September.
