Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich was transported to St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan, Wisconsin after crashing during a wet promoter practice session Thursday at Road America. Ulrich suffered a fracture to the second metacarpal of his left hand and may need surgery to pin the fracture, according to reports from his team. Details about Ulrich’s crash were not available at post time. Ulrich is currently fourth in the AMA Superstock Championship. He qualified on pole position during wet Superstock qualifying at Road America in 2007. Update: Ulrich highsided in Turn Seven as it started raining more heavily in that area of the track. Matsushima Suzuki’s Danny Eslick witnessed the incident and said Ulrich was “an astronaut” due to how high he was launched. Ulrich said he remembers being high enough to look down and see the entire side of his GSX-R1000. Ulrich shattered the second metacarpal directly below the knuckle of his index finger and fractured the tip of his thumb on his left hand. Ulrich is currently consulting with an orthopedic surgeon at St. Nicholas Hospital and Dr. Arthur Ting via telephone. He will have surgery to pin the fractured metacarpal and the thumb will be left to heal naturally. Ulrich has not ruled out trying to race this weekend.
