Riders and teams are abandoning a scheduled two-day set-up and development test at Road Atlanta due to problems with the racing surface in several areas. What was originally planned as a test for teams, is turning into a feasibility study of the revised course layout prior to the AMA National scheduled for August 28-31 at the track. New surface grinding in the new Turn 12 bypass and in a new, additional chicane in the esses is so slippery that riders have to avoid it altogether. Among the riders who stopped riding early on are Mat Mladin and Miguel Duhamel. Riders who crashed on the surface grinding include Cory West and Robertino Pietri. Riders say that the pavement leading into the surface-ground areas offers excellent traction and the transition between that pavement and the surface-ground areas is like hitting ice. The surface grinding in the new Turn 12 bypass was apparently supposed to eliminate a bump left over from when the bypass was paved. More information will be posted as soon as it is available.
