Young opened the day by logging a 1:26.094 aboard his Pirelli-shod GSX-R1000 to head the charts in the Superstock free session. He later backed that up by running second quick on his GSX-R600 Supersport machine in Supersport with a fast time of 1:28.392 around the reconfigured Road Atlanta circuit in Braselton, GA. The Wisconsin native said, “We’re excited. In Superstock we had a red flag and I ended up getting back out at the end. The whole session we were trying some different suspension changes and things, but we weren’t getting it dialed in as well as what we had at the beginning. We started working with it again and I got in two good laps at the end and it went pretty good. Still, even though we were fastest today, I think that 1000 can go a little bit quicker. “As far as Supersport goes, we started off strong. We came in and talked about some tire choices trying to decide what will be our best option for the race. The bike was pretty good straight off the truck and you’ve got to be happy when that happens. It just makes my job that much easier. “I think we’ve got two good racebikes this weekend.” Young was joined by his teammates, Cory West and Martin Cardenas, in Supersport as the entire team impressed during the session. West was also in the top five, lapping fifth fastest at 1:28.872 while Cardenas was solidly in the top ten as well, putting in the eighth best time at 1:29.101. Colombian Cardenas will open his quest for a third consecutive Formula Xtreme podium finish from the inside of the second row tomorrow, qualifying fifth fastest aboard his FX-spec GSX-R600. The former World 250 Grand Prix competitor stopped the clocks at 1:28.120 aboard his Pirelli slick-shod racebike in preparation for Saturday’s 15-lap race. In addition to Cardenas’ FX race, on Saturday Team M4 EMGO Suzuki will qualify for Sunday’s Superstock and Supersport finals at Road Atlanta.
