Former AMA Pro (1000cc) Superstock Championship Aaron Gobert will race a San Diego BMW/Locust Powered by Lee’s Cycles S1000RR Superbike in this coming weekend’s AMA Pro season finale at New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP). “I’ve been watching AMA racing since I left,” the six-time AMA Pro race winner told Roadracingworld.com, “and obviously if there’s an opportunity to come back on a team that can win I’m more than interested. This bike has been top-five with Steve [Rapp] on it most of the year, and his best result was fourth. I’ve been watching how good it is. Plus, I’ve been friends with Lee’s Cycles since the beginning of my career in the AMA. I raced against Jeremy [Toye] in my very first events [in the U.S] at Willow Springs. It all came together, and it turns out I was the guy who got a chance to ride the bike.” Gobert last raced full-time in the AMA Pro Road Racing series in 2009, a year he finished with the KWS Motorsports Aprilia team. Since then he has been racing his own privateer Yamaha in the Australian Supersport Championship, where he won a race earlier this season. “To be honest with you, I have more trouble riding a 600 than I do riding a 1000,” said Gobert. “I’m a 1000 rider, and 600s are just a pain in the ass. But 600s are cheap to run, and that’s what I’ve got back home. “In Australia I’ve just been making sure I’m fresh by riding the 600. The competition is strong down there. We’ve got Kevin Curtain, who was almost Supersport World Champion, except for a flat front tire. When you’re racing guys like that on factory bikes it keeps you sharp. So it’s been really good. I’ve been keeping the sword sharp, you could say. We got the opportunity to race this weekend, and we’ll see how sharp it really is.”
