AMA Pro Daytona SportBike racer Dane Westby is recovering at his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after suffering a bruised and slightly lacerated spleen in a crash March 14 during practice for the Daytona 200, at Daytona International Speedway. Westby was one of several riders who fell victim to cold ambient temperatures, cold tire temperatures and a slick track surface in the Speedway’s chicane, but the 2012 AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Championship runner-up was hit by his GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing Honda CBR600RR as they tumbled. That contact injured Westby, and he was hospitalized overnight in Halifax Medical Center. Westby was released the following day, but a little over 24 hours later he was back at the hospital to investigate a high fever. Westby was examined, treated and released, and he and his father Tryg started driving home to Oklahoma on March 17. Since that time, Westby says he has been “lying low, getting a lot of rest. I can’t do anything. I can’t ride my bicycle or anything. So I’ve just been lying around. I feel OK, but the doctors told me I can’t do anything. I just can’t get too active. “I’m supposed to see a doctor here pretty soon, three weeks out, to tell me if everything is OK and maybe give me the OK to start using the stationary bicycle. It’s alright. I’m getting better every day. “They said six weeks out I should be able to start riding. I’ll see what the doctor says, but that gives me some time to get ready [for Round Two of the series]. With the schedule like it is I should have a couple of weeks to train, and I think we’re going to have a test, too. So I’ll get to ride the bike before going to Road America [May 30-June 2].”
