The GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing Series could be included in a future Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas event weekend. That’s the word from Mel Harder, Circuit Of The Americas (COTA) Senior Vice President & General Manager. Harder responded to a direct question about COTA hosting AMA Pro by explaining that it might be possible to include selected AMA Pro classes by extending the event weekend by one day and running AMA Pro practice on Thursday. “They’ll give us the time on the weekend if we want to do it,” Harder said, referring to MotoGP promoter DORNA. Harder took the job at COTA earlier this year after working at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for about 20 years. He arrived in Austin just before COTA declined to host a stand-alone AMA Pro weekend, and said that the complicated logistics associated with putting on a MotoGP weekend made it impossible to consider including AMA Pro this year. Any deal involving a future MotoGP weekend would likely include the AMA Pro National Guard Superbike and the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona Sportbike classes only. AMA Pro Race Director David McGrath flew into Austin on Friday afternoon and flew out on Sunday morning. DMG partner and former AMA Pro Racing COO David Atlas is at the track today.
