A ceremony is scheduled for the upcoming (April 27-28) Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association (CVMA) race weekend in memory of racer Steven Holt, who died earlier this month at the age of 54. Holt was found dead at his Fallbrook, California, home on April 8 at 6:33 p.m., according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office. Determination of the cause of death is still pending, the office said. Walter Nitto, a former AFM No. 1 plate holder and a friend of Holt, said Holt was suffering from advanced bone cancer and was in a significant amount of pain. “He’s been hurt a lot with other injuries, so the painkillers they were giving him weren’t doing anything for the pain from the cancer,” Nitto said. “He basically went to sleep and didn’t wake up.” For the upcoming CVMA race weekend, Nitto is scheduled to race with Holt’s CVMA race number 53 on his bike, and Nitto has wrapped the tailsection of his Triumph 675 with an image of Holt on the racetrack. In addition, Nitto is scheduled to take a lap of honor during the weekend in Holt’s memory, and some of Holt’s ashes will be scattered at the track, Nitto said. According to his official biography, Holt was born and raised in Los Altos and graduated from San Jose State University with a Master’s degree equivalent. Holt was an adjunct professor in special education at the college level and served as a counselor at the California School for the Deaf, as well as writing poetry, novels and magazine articles.
