Westby medically cleared to race GEICO Motorcycle Honda TULSA, Okla. (May 9) – After eight weeks of severe restrictions of physical activity, GEICO Motorcycle Honda Daytona SportBike racer Dane Westby now has a clean bill of health and has resumed a normal training routine with the target of returning for the May 31-June 2 Subway Superbike Doubleheader at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. A crash during practice at the season-opening Daytona 200 in Florida resulted in a spleen injury that forced the normally active Westby to halt any and all training or risk rupturing the organ, a potentially life-threatening issue. This week a clean CAT scan cleared Westby for normal racing activity, and he wasted no time getting back to work. “I got back on my mountain bike right away,” Westby said. “I took it easy, but it felt so good to get moving again. Then Wednesday I got on my road bike and went about 25 miles, which is good for me, especially since I’ve not been able to do anything in awhile. “Since I learned to ride a motorcycle as a boy, I’ve never gone this long without riding one. Then not being able to ride my bicycle or anything, I’ve felt kind of lost. I’m embracing the return to activity.” To help fill the time, Westby said he did small projects around his house, but the domestic life has worn thin. “I’m done with home improvements,” Westby said. “We’re going to have a team test at Barber in Alabama next week and I can’t wait. That will be [the] next time I’ll get on a race bike, and I’m really looking forward to it. “It’ll be good to have the opportunity to shake off all the rust before I go to Road America. I want to put in a bunch of laps and get back into race shape.” Westby was humbled by the outpouring of well wishes after his accident and commented on this uplifting aspect of the greater road racing family during his rehab. “Everyone’s been so cool, from the other racers to our sponsors and even fans that took the time to reach out to me and tell me to hang in there,” Westby said. “I can’t thank everyone enough for that because it really carried me through the low times. Now I want to go out and win some races for all of them.”
