The historic low of 31 entries in the 2013 Daytona 200 may have just been the start of the decline of AMA Pro Daytona SportBike. As of today–three days after the close of entries on May 20th–the official AMA Pro Racing website shows that just 22 riders have entered the class for the upcoming second round of the 2013 series, scheduled for Road America on May 31st-June 2nd. Compared to 2012’s 31 entries, entries are down 30% this year. Compared to 2009’s 47 entries, entries this year are down 53%. The cost of preparing and fielding equipment under existing AMA Pro Racing rules (which allow advanced electronics in the largely 600cc class), a drop in available sponsorship support related to the late announcement of a 2013 series TV deal, and general economic conditions may have all contributed to the decline. 2013 AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Entries at Road America = 22 (as of May 23rd, three days after entries close) 2012 AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Entries at Road America = 31 2011 AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Entries at Road America = 30 2010 AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Entries at Road America = 29 2009 AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Entries at Road America = 47 Copyright 2013 Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.
