Jerez appointed World Capital of Motorcycling 2015
The FIM is pleased to announce that during the meeting of its Board of Directors in Copenhagen in June, the Spanish city of Jerez de la Frontera was appointed World Capital of Motorcycling 2015.
This appointment is a new initiative to help raise awareness of the range of FIM motorcycling activities and at the same time to promote the host region, thereby enhancing the worldwide visibility of both.
Already a popular and well established stop on the FIM MotoGP calendar, Jerez will welcome an extensive programme of events during 2015 which will include rounds of the Superbike, Enduro, Trial and other FIM Championships and of course MotoGP championships.
In addition to a packed schedule of sporting activities the beautiful Spanish city of Jerez will host a series of symposiums focused on Women in motorcycling, sustainability and two-wheel road safety, riders’ safety and leadership. It will also organise a number of training camps throughout 2015.
The official announcement regarding this prestigious appointment will be made during the FIM Gala Ceremony which will take place in Jerez de la Frontera alongside the FIM Annual General Assembly on 22 & 23 November 2014.
Speaking about this new initiative FIM President Vito Ippolito said: “Over an extended period Jerez has set the benchmark for hosting motorcycling events. Each year the Grand Prix attracts many thousands of people to this region which is also world famous for its sherry production.”
“Having Jerez as the first ever World Capital of Motorcycling will also set the benchmark for future host cities, as this is a very important opportunity to showcase the variety and diversity of the many FIM Championships and all the many other FIM activities as well as the strengths and beauty of the local region.”
The Mayor of Jerez, María José García-Pelayo added: “This appointment is a great honour and a huge responsibility as Jerez is the first city in the World to receive this award from the FIM, the highest authority for motorcycling and the governing body for the sport at world level.”
