Saved By Soft Barriers: Mike Copoulos Crashes Into A Wall And Walks Away To Tell The Tale In The February 2018 Issue Of Roadracing World

The February 2018 issue of Roadracing World & Motorcycle Technology starts off with a first-hand account of how Airfence soft barriers saved racer Mike Copoulos when he crashed while testing his racebike during a Performance Riding Experience (PRE) Track Days event at VIRginia International Raceway.

A clip-on handlebar came loose while Copoulos was at speed on an out-lap for an afternoon session, throwing him off balance and sending him roaring off-track and straight toward a tire wall fronting a steel barrier and dirt embankment, where other crashes had killed one rider and left others very seriously injured.

But this time the tire-wall/steel-barrier/dirt-embankment combination was padded, because PRE has worked closely with the not-for-profit Roadracing World Action Fund (RWAF) to raise money to buy and deploy soft barriers at tracks where PRE and other track-day and racing organizations run events. And a row of RWAF/PRE Airfence soft barriers was deployed in front of the tire-wall/steel-barrier/dirt-embankment combination Copoulos was headed for. This time, the rider was battered and bruised, but walked away.
