How Good Is The 2020 BMW S 1000 RR For American Track Days?

     The new BMW S 1000 RR is a bike of many moods. It’s
alternately flawlessly precise and powerful; recalcitrant and unpredictable; or
shades in between.

     It is also a wonder of modern motorsports
machinery. BMW has poured an impressive array of advances into this bike to
create a sophisticated, race-ready production superbike that can fairly be
described as a crown jewel of Teutonic technology. 
With cruise control! And heated grips!

     The heated grips were not necessary on the warm,
humid, overcast late spring day when I rode the BMW at Barber Motorsports Park,
a track better known for blind turns, swooping elevation changes, and beautiful
and whimsical landscaping than for ultimate top-speed straightaways.

     BMW North America had procured a day at Barber and
kitted out a stable of 2020 BMW S 1000 RRs with some of the available optional
performance upgrade packages, plus non-OEM Pirelli SC1 (front) and SC2 (rear)
tires, for this American intro.

     My mission was to evaluate the bike’s track-day
capabilities on an American racetrack …

BMW’s newest S 1000 RR offers even
more of the technological sophistication that has always marked the German
