Former racer, racing sponsor, and Roadracing World contributor Dr. Laura Ellis, M.D. suffered serious injuries when she crashed while riding her personal motorcycle July 8 in North Carolina.

“I was riding my Husqvarna 350 dual-sport bike on forest service roads with a friend,” Dr. Ellis told Roadracingworld.com in a telephone interview from her hospital bed. “I wasn’t riding at high speed or anything, but I crashed and hit a rock just right that cracked my tibia plateau in my right leg.

“I didn’t know how bad it was. I just knew I couldn’t bear any weight on that leg. I figured I probably broke the tibia. So I just rode on the back of my friend’s bike to get out of the woods. I also broke some ribs and got a concussion and suffered a lower-back hematoma.”

Dr. Ellis said she went to see her usual orthopedist the next day, and that doctor referred her to a specialist, who said the injury would require surgery.

“Unfortunately, it’s a really bad crack and needed surgical repair, which I had done yesterday [July 11],” said Dr. Ellis. “The repair is bone grafting, plating, screwing, and immobilization [of the fracture]. I can’t put any weight on my leg for two months.”

Dr. Ellis, who is a practicing surgeon specializing in anti-aging treatments, sports medicine and athlete development through her medAge clinics and offices in California and North Carolina, has sent out an email to all of her patients and clients advising them of her accident and notifying them that she will be out of action for a “few weeks.”

Dr. Ellis sponsors racer Nick McFadden on his M4 medAge Suzuki GSX-R600 in the MotoAmerica Supersport Championship.
