MotoAmerica Junior Cup racer Cameron Jones, age 25, is on the road to recovery after crashing and suffering a head injury August 26 at Pittsburgh International Race Complex (PittRace), according to his father Darrell Jones.

Cameron Jones crashed in a multi-rider pile-up in Turn Three at the start of MotoAmerica Junior Cup Race Two, and Jones was knocked unconscious at the scene of the accident, according to his father.

“I’ve been a motorcycle dealer for 45 years and I’ve sponsored racers like Joe Kopp and Kenny Coolbeth,” Darrell Jones told Roadracingworld.com in a telephone interview Tuesday, “and I’ve never seen a situation where the rider’s helmet broke, especially a top of the line carbon-fiber helmet, and it turned out good.”

Jones was transported via ambulance to a trauma center, UPMC Hospital, in Pittsburgh. There, scans revealed that Jones had bleeding on his brain and he was hospitalized for observation and possible surgery.

Tuesday morning, however, the bleeding stopped, the surgery was called off, and Jones is currently preparing to fly home to Columbia, Missouri.

“I think he’s heading for a full recovery,” said Darrell Jones. “He’s talking and walking. His balance and his speech are good. We think he’s going to be OK, and we just wanted everyone to know because our phones have been blowing up.”
