      “There has been a lot of discussion about the level of youth racing in the United States when compared to Europe. The current level of racing and rider development on offer in Italy and Spain has prompted some families with racing aspirations to ship their kids off to race in Europe instead of staying home. That doesn’t guarantee a kid will hit the big time, as the 2019 MotoGP Red Bull Rookies Cup selection event results prove.

     “I started mini-racing on YSR50s in Southern California at the age of 12 and was able to grind out a living racing motorcycles for a long time. Granted, I had to work hard at it on and off the track, but I had some professional success. The three Hayden brothers—Tommy, Nicky, and Roger—raced dirt trackers and YSR50s early in their development. John Hopkins and Ben Spies also started on YSR50s.

    “More recently, it seems the only real option for a young road racer is to start on a mini-motocross bike fitted with street tires. That’s not ideal—anyone who has hopped off a motard onto a sportbike knows they offer completely different sensations. Brandon Cretu of Rise Moto is aiming to change that …”
