It was introduced in 2002 as the successor to the former premier 500cc class
championship, changing the regulation to under-500cc 2-stroke machines or
under-990cc 4-stroke machines. Today, the championship is contested on
under-1000cc 4-stroke machines.
This video offers a behind-the-scenes look at Valentino Rossi's race at Sachsenring during the German Grand Prix in 2013, particularly how he works with his engine control engineer.
