MotoGP™ innovation testing Ultra High definition television broadcast

On Friday September 12th during the first day of action at the Gran Premio TIM di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini, Dorna Sports carried out the IBC 4K Live Ultra-High Definition broadcast in partnership with EUROVISION, Fujifilm, Grass Valley, I-MOVIX, SKY Italia and ONE Technology, coinciding with the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam.

The MotoGP™ 4K Live Showcase is the latest innovation from Dorna Sports, implementing emerging technology and incorporating Super slow motion (SSM) and Ultra slow motion (USM) images, broadcast live at the highest definition possible, driving forward picture quality for the benefit of broadcasters and viewers around the world.

The Misano test carried out by Dorna Sports was a real time product test, undertaken to assist 4K UHD1 technology developers, in order to maintain the momentum of their innovation and to ultimately enhance the viewing experience of MotoGP fans. The industry world manufactuirers take advantage of this kind of live test to analize and check suring long terms periods of time how this prototype equipment reacts in field outdoor production.

On the broadcast of live UHD1 pictures during the MotoGP™ 4K Live Showcase, Dorna Sports’ Media Area Managing Director Manel Arroyo commented, “The application of cutting edge technology is the essence of MotoGP and it is crucial for us to test the latest solutions on behalf of our broadcast partners. We provide MotoGP fans across the globe with the highest possible quality images possible, driving the evolution of technology in the live sports broadcasting sector. For live UHD1 4K broadcasting to become a reality for fans to enjoy at home, experiments such as our Misano test this weekend are a fundamental part of that process and we are delighted with the results.”

The specific benefits of UHD1 4K are higher resolutions (an increased amount of pixels) than HDTV, in addition to more realistic colour and higher frames rates. The image broadcast does not lose quality, definition or sharpness when the viewer is close to the screen.

Dorna Sports is the exclusive commercial and television rights holder for the FIM MotoGP™ World Championship and produces Live TV coverage from all Grands Prix in-house, guaranteeing consistently high-quality broadcasts for television partners.

In 2014, the Live International Programme Feed is produced in High Definition Dolby 5.1 using more than 100 High Definition cameras at each GP, including fixed cameras, purpose-made OnBoard cameras, Heli, RF and Super High-speed Slow Motion cameras.
