Tom Aquino, the father of Tommy Aquino, has been invited by the Los Angeles (California) Board of Supervisors to attend a special ceremony July 14 in Los Angeles, California. The ceremony will include the County of Los Angeles declaring July Motocross Safety Awareness Month, according to Aquino.

Tommy Aquino, a popular and promising road racer who had won AMA Pro Daytona SportBike and British Superstock 1000 races, was killed when he was struck by another rider’s out-of-control motorcycle February 2, 2014, at Piru Ranch MX, in Ventura County, California, just north of Los Angeles. He was 21.

According to Tom Aquino, if some haybales had been placed between sections of the track his son might not have been hit by the other motorcycle and if emergency medical technicians (EMTs) had been on-site at the track they may have given his son the time needed to get to a medical facility where he could have received more medical treatment.

But Tom Aquino isn’t on a crusade against motocross tracks, he said, pointing out that he and Tommy’s younger brother Michael still ride motocross. He just hopes that with more awareness comes more changes to improve safety and save lives.
