Results Form Round Three of the OMRRA Series at Portland International Raceway This past weekend, a new wrinkle was added to racing on two wheels at Portland International Raceway: the addition of the festival curves. The festival curves are a 3-turn chicane that break up PIR’s long front straight, turning what is known as a horsepower track into tipping the scales towards a rider’s track. The addition quickly became a spectator favorite and the paddock was abuzz with anticipation. Competition was remarkably close as lap times increased by nearly 10 seconds under unseasonably warm and sunny skies. In 2Fast Track Days Formula Ultra Championship action, Alan Schmidt of Kamploops, BC continued to show his dominance over the rest of the field. In Saturday’s Formula Ultra race, a few contenders, Kevin Pinkstaff and Sam Verderico were able to keep pace with Schmidt in a handful of laps before Schmidt checked out. However, in Sunday’s race, Verderico was able to keep contact with Schmidt and in the latter stages of the race, Verderico was able to pass for the lead. A missed shift by Verderico allowed Schmidt to take the win by 0.10 seconds at the line. Verderico would have to settle for the best time of the race. In KFGRacing Clubman Championship news, Andy DiBrino and Ryan Sutton resumed their elbow-to-elbow push for 600/750 class supremacy. By the end of the weekend, Sutton and DiBrino would split the 4 contests in which they competed head-to-head. The belles of the ball were the Ninja 250 racers. The group added an incredible amount of excitement to the race day battling mere inches from one another through the newly utilized chicane. Chris Page was able to break away from the pack and scored an impressive sweep of the field and assume the lead in the Clubman Championship. Matt O’Rourke scored 3 of 5 2nd place finishes with Kelly Johnson and Andrew Pignataro picking up the other two. For the Bridge City Cycles Vintage Championship, current championship leader, Eirik Nielsen, registered 3 out of 4 race wins and took the day in Middleweight and Lightweight Vintage under Olympic scoring rules. Patrick Leyshock would have to settle for 2nd overall in Middleweight Vintage while Mica Grohn took 3rd overall in Middleweight Vintage and 2nd in Lightweight Vintage.
