Round 5 Vortex Masters of the Mountains

Round 5 of the Vortex Masters of the Mountains series was held Sunday, August 31st on Miller Motorsports Park West track and was host to some hard fought battles throughout the weekend.

Racing kicked off Saturday with the Deseret Dash races. Oleg Pianykh set the tone for the weekend with dominant wins in both expert races while the novice race wins were split by Derek Festavan and Albert Andrade.

Sunday’s King of the Mountain GTU race saw Brian Childree grab the lead going into turn one and begin putting a gap on the field. His position looked secure until a mistake at mid-race distance saw him run off track in the middle of turn 7. Despite re-entering track still in first place his lead shrank considerably and opened the door for Chad Swain to attack half a lap later. The two remained close for the rest of the race but Swain was able to hold on for the win.

The premier open class, King of the Mountain GTO also saw some incredible racing with a four-way battle between Oleg Pianykh, Michael Bradshaw, Chad Swain and Jesse Sherstan. Michael Bradshaw led the pack across the line on lap one but after that the gloves were off. Not only was the battle intense but the pace was incredible. All four riders in the lead pack set times in the low 1:30s, a blistering pace that separated them from the rest of the field. In the end Pianykh managed to cross the finish line first ahead of Bradshaw but only by the narrowest of margins.

“We had a great weekend this round. My Suzuki GSX-R1000 was running really well and we won four out of four classes this weekend so I’m happy with that. It was great fighting with those guys this weekend, the racing was tough but everything was fair. Thanks to Moto-Station, Vortex Racing, Wicked Audio and all my other sponsors.”
