While most Australians who race in AMA Pro road racing series are planning on flying back to their native land later today or soon after, Mat Mladin and Marty Craggill are planning to stay at their race season homes in Southern California a little longer to have surgery performed. At Road Atlanta, Mladin revealed to Roadracingworld.com that he has been racing with two small fractures and floating bone fragments in his left ankle since his high-speed crash during testing at Daytona International Speedway in January. “Unlike some racers, I don’t ask for sympathy for my injuries or use them as excuses,” said Mladin, who said he isn’t affected by the injury while on the bike. However, Mladin has been walking with a noticeable limp in 2005. Mladin plans to have surgery at the hands of Dr. Thomas Bryan of Covina, California, the same doctor Mladin has been going to since he injured his elbow in another crash at Daytona in 2002. During that surgery, which is scheduled for September 9, Mladin will also have work done to improve the range of motion from the ankle, which has been limited since his 1995 ultra-light aircraft crash. Craggill doesn’t know when he will be having his surgery, but it will come “as soon as possible,” said the veteran racer. “I’ve had problems with cramping in my left leg for a long time. Last week I had a full-body MRI, and they found an aneurism in the femoral artery of my left leg. It’s a pretty serious deal.”
